COM/516 Week Three Discussion
In order to be an effective team member in a school setting, there are many different qualities and characteristics that you must possess. First, you must be willing to work and collaborate within a team of other teachers. At my school, we meet in our PLC groups every Thursday. During this time, we are meant to collaborate on various topics and issues that we deal with as teachers. If you cannot collaborate in a constructive way, it will be hard to be an effective team member. Secondly, you must be willing and able to accept constructive criticism, both negative and positive, and be able to grow. Any criticism that you receive from you team or
even from administration is meant to help you learn and grow. Taking it negatively could, and eventually will, cause a ripple effect of negativity that is not necessary. Lastly, you need to be HAPPY! Even with all of the struggles and frustrations we face as educators, you need to show up and be happy for your coworkers and, more importantly, your students. You cannot let your students see your frustrations because they literally see everything and can sense when something is off. My 5th graders are very good at letting me know when I seem to be upset about something so putting on a happy face is everything.
When working within my team of 5th grade teachers, we all take on the same tasks in order to support each other. If someone needs copies made, we offer to help. If someone creates an assessment tool or an assignment, we always collaborate and share. We also take on the responsibility of checking in on one another to make sure that we are mentally okay.
Complete collaboration doesn’t come without struggles. Sometimes, it can be hard to collaborate with individuals who are either against working together or they have a different working style. Successful collaboration relies on your ability to set differences aside and work towards a common goal: helping our students succeed. During our PLC’s, we regularly rotate through assigned roles such as facilitator, recorder, and time keeper. These roles are essential to the success of our meetings. Every member is also responsible for contributing ideas and solutions to key discussion questions regarding topics such as, but not limited to, data collection and analysis, grading, content and pedagogy, and climate/culture.
The topic of collaboration links to the College’s Conceptual Framework through learning successful ways to collaborate with educational communities. As stated, teachers are responsible not only for effective collaboration and communication with colleagues but also with parents. If you cannot, or will not, learn ways to effectively communicate then you will have a hard time within the world of education.
