Reading Assignment – Option 1 Due Sunday, February 6th at 10 pm EST on Blackboard Note to Students: Content Warning (CW): The article for this option contains descriptions and references to sexual assault, harassment, and violence. Overall Task: Option 1 : In full and grammatical sentences, answer the twelve questions below about the text, “The Ratmagnet Effect: What We Learned and What Was Left Unsaid” by Kerri Brown (2021) . Do not forget your APA 7 in-text citations. Questions to Answer Before you Read the Text 1. One of the critical reading strategies is to list everything you already know about the topic before reading the article. This allows readers to tap into their prior knowledge, which helps them better understand the text they are going to read. Before you read Kerri Brown’s article, describe everything you know about violence and discrimination in the food and beverage industry. Do not hesitate to share how you know this information. Violence and discrimination in the food and beverage industry are very common and get a lot of attraction from people. In my opinion, this problem affects everyone badly in many ways, it affects not only the workers but also customers. There are many infestations of this issue in a whole lot of ways. There are some aspects of violence and discrimination in this industry that I know like violence against workers, discrimination in employment, discrimination in customer service, unfair pay and benefits, health and safety issues I know this information because some people I know work in a restaurant and have to bad with it all the time. 2. Another critical reading strategy is to preview the text and look for clues as to what the text will be about . Readers do this by skimming the title, subtitle, headings, sub-headings, and the first and last line of each paragraph. Again, this allows readers to make predictions and form expectations about the text they are about to take in. As readers read, they can ask themselves if their predictions were right or wrong. Before you read Kerri Brown’s article, preview the text by skimming the article; don’t forget the images in the text! What do you predict the article will be about? Don’t forget to reason with evidence. With Focus on recent revelations and efforts to address these issues, I predict that the article will discuss the pervasive problem of gender-based violence and sexism in the craft beer industry. It will probably show how important it is to work together, get more money, and make changes to the systems to solve this problem.
Questions to Answer As you Read the Text 1. Authors are not always explicit (straightforward) about their views, purpose/ goal, message. Often, they imply (suggest or hint) their points. Therefore, a critical reading strategy is to make inferences or “read between the lines” as you read to accurately understand the full meaning of a text. An inference is an educated guess based on evidence in the text, combined with your prior knowledge. As you’re reading, then, it’s a good idea to make some notes in the margins of the text or on a separate page about your inferences, as well as the evidence that led to your conclusions. As you read Brown’s article, what can you infer is the author’s main point or thesis ? How did you reach this conclusion? In other words, what is the evidence in the text to imply that this is the author’s main message? Don’t forget to consider the title. The author’s main point in this article is about the issue of violence and discrimination in the craft beer industry. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing the nature of violence and discrimination in the workplace. This problem is not limited to one country but is a global problem in the craft beer industry, so we need to address it systemically rather than focusing solely on individual cases 2. As you read Brown’s article, what can you infer is the author’s motivation behind the text? In other words, what might have compelled the author to create this text? How did you reach this conclusion? In other words, what is the evidence in the text to imply that this is the author’s motivation? The author’s motivation behind this article reflects many aspects of life. First of all, she wants to raise awareness for everyone. In addition, the author wants to call for concrete structural changes and for the industry to act. Lastly, she also highlighted the need for a broader discussion on interjectionally, recognizing that discrimination and violence intersect with various aspects of identity. In my opinion, the subjects that the author wants to mention are craft beer industry professionals, the public, advocates, and policymakers. Overall, the author’s purpose in this article is to highlight the important issue that needs to change and mobilize people to address the issue of violence and discrimination in the craft beer industry. 3. Another way we make inferences is by examining the author’s diction (choice of words). Often, an author’s diction is packed with hidden meaning, and the author’s choice of words can tell us a lot about what they really mean, how they view something, and what they want to achieve with their piece. What is at least one word or phrase that the author uses to connote (imply or suggest) a deeper meaning, such as their attitude towards a topic, their point of view/ perspective, or their bias? Explain the connotation of the word or phrase you have identified and explain how it deepened your understanding of the topic, issue, or message. Epidemiological is the word that the author uses to connote a deeper meaning. When she describes gender-based violence as happening at epidemiological rates in the craft
beer industry she is not just emphasizing the issue but also invoking the connotation of a public health crisis. The connotation of epidemiological suggests that the problem of gender-based violence is a pervasive and deeply rooted issue that affects the health and well-being of individual, families, and communities. This helps people understand the importance of the problem and the need to solve it quickly and promptly with appropriate and systematic measures. 4. Another critical reading strategy is to identify the author’s support for their main point(s) . This helps readers confirm their understanding of the author’s main message, and it helps readers see the basic components of an effective argument (or lack of!). Readers can then use this information to assess whether the author’s point is valid, and they can decide whether they would want to use similar techniques in their own pieces of communication. What kinds of evidence does the author use to support their main points? What did you take away or learn from clearly identifying the author’s supporting arguments, reasons, examples, and facts (or lack of)? Think about what you have learned about how you can develop and defend your own arguments. The author uses many kinds of evidence to support her main points in her text. There are personal narratives, statistics and data, anecdotal accounts, examples of initiatives and resources, references to legal and policy changes, references to organizations and networks, and the author’s perspective. This evidence support the author’s arguments regarding the widespread problem of gender based violence and the need for systematic change in the craft beer industry. 5. Another critical reading strategy is to have a conversation with the text and ask questions as you read because it helps readers focus on the meaning of the text. As you were reading the text, what was one question that came to you? Why did you wonder about this question? Did you find the answer to your question in the text? One question that came to mind while reading the text was: “What specific actions or changes does the author propose to address the issue of gender-based violence and discrimination in the craft beer industry?”. I want to know if the author concrete suggestions or recommendations for addressing the issues discussed in the article because the author highlights the severity of the problem, the need for systemic changes, and the importance of collecting data. When I was reading the text, I found that the author did mention some initiatives and resources aimed at addressing the problem. However, the text only talks about the urgency and necessary of the problem without providing specific measures and action to solve the problem. Questions to Answer After you Read the Text 1. To wrap up the reading process, we use another critical reading strategy: make connections . Effective readers connect the author’s arguments or main idea to other things they know about because it helps them to develop a deeper understanding of the text, and possibly develop an understanding of different perspectives. How does Brown’s article connect with or relate to another text you

know about? If you do not know of another text, consider how it relates to this video: "Inside McDonald’s Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Problem” by VICE News . When you put the two texts side-by-side, how does the connection or relationship between the two texts help you deepen your understanding of the topic or issue? The article “the rat magnet effect by Kerri Brown and the video “inside McDonald’s sexual harassment and discrimination problem” by VICE News both talk about sexual harassment and discrimination in different industries. These problems are linked by the larger theme of violence and sexism based on gender in the workplace. Both texts talk about how violence, harassment, and discrimination based on gender are common in the workplace. Brown’s article is about craft beer industry, but the VICE News video is about McDonald’s, which is a big fast-food chain (VICE News,2021). Even though the businesses are different, they both show that these problems still happen in many workplaces. The connection between the two texts helps to show that these problems aren’t just in one industry. Instead, they are systemic problems that can be found in many different parts of the job market. This makes it clearer that harassment and discrimination in the workplace are a bigger problem for society. 2. How does Brown’s article connect with or relate to something in your life? How does this connection or relationship help deepen your understanding of the topic or issue? The connection between Brown’s article and what I know about larger social issues helps me see that these problems are not isolated incidents, but rather widespread problems that need everyone to be aware, speak out, and act. By emphasising the need for a thorough and intersectional approach to address workplace discrimination and gender-based violence in different contexts, it helps me understand the topic better. 3. How does Brown’s article connect with or relate to the world around you? How does this connection or relationship help deepen your understanding of the topic or issue? When the article talks about how gender-based violence and other forms of discrimination, like racism and homophobia, overlap, it fits with the ongoing conversations about intersectionality in society. It shows that people often face multiple types of discrimination based on different parts of their identities. 4. Reflecting on all of the critical reading strategies you have used in this assignment, which one was the most useful to you and why? Which reading strategies do you see yourself using again in the future and why? I found the strategy of making inferences and “reading between the lines” to be the most useful of the critical reading strategies used in this assignment. Making inferences means drawing educated guesses based on information in the text and combining it with what you already know. This strategy was especially helpful because it helped me figure out the author’s main point, motivation, implied meanings, and attitudes, even when they weren’t said outright. It helped me dig deeper into the text and pull-out knowledge. These reading strategies are useful not only for school reading, but also for daily reading, whether it’s news article, books, or any other kind of written
communication. They enable effective communication of ideas and concepts and promote a more thorough and critical understanding of the material. 5. Create an APA 7 Reference citation for the sources you used (at least two): Author's Last Name, First intial. Second Initial if Given. (Year blog post was published, Month Day).
