Technology Age/ Grade: 5 years old/ kindergarten School Kindergartners may use technology to complete activities in different subject areas integrating technology into the classroom. Technology resources range from computers, software programs, camcorders, and voice recorders. Kindergartners may have one or more computer workstations in the classroom or children may listen to books CD or stories being read aloud on the Internet. Children at kindergarten can use draw and paint software programs such as Kid Pix and AppleWorks to insert pictures that begin with the letter sound the class is learning. Childcare initiative recommends that caregivers allow no screen time for children under 2 years of age. For children 2 and older, caregivers are encouraged to limit screen time to no more than 30 minutes per week during childcare, and parents and
caregivers are advised to work together to limit children to one to two hours of quality screen time per day (Schepper 2011; White House 2011). Early childhood educators need to be aware of all these concerns and understand the critical role that they as educators play in mediating technology and media use and screen time for young children. To get maximum benefit from technology, the best classrooms
incorporate technology into regular lessons that develop students’ higher order thinking skills, promote creativity, and facilitate academic learning. Many doctors and educators believe that the use of electronic learning devices should be limited. There should be reasonable guidelines concerning the frequency of use. It is not good for kids to spend most of their learning time in front of glowing screens; the use of technology devices should be monitored and limited. Appropriate technology and media use balances and enhances the use of essential materials, activities, and interactions in the early childhood setting, becoming part of the daily routine (Anderson 2000; Van Scoter, Ellis, & Railsback 2001; Copple & Bredekamp 2009; NAEYC 2009a). Technology and media should not replace activities such as creative play, real-life exploration, physical activity, outdoor experiences, conversation, and social interactions that are important for children’s development. Technology and media should be used to support learning, not an isolated activity, and to expand young children’s access to new content (Guernsey 2010a, 2011b). There are some benefits of using technology in literacy instruction. Literacy stations and collaborative work settings based around the usage of e – books, online phonics games, and incentivized online experiences can make literacy more engaging and motivating for students. An example of how to use technology for teaching and improving skills in literacy is by game – based learning. Using games for instruction develops reading skills and keeps students
engaged. Games in vocabulary, spelling, and grammar help make reading concepts
easier to understand. Playing games is a current and fun way to boost reading and literacy skills for students (Pamela White, February 14,2023. Why should teachers use tech tools to sharpen literacy skills).

Before including any technology in the classroom we should ask ourselves: Are children staying engaged with the use of technology? Is the use of technology intentionally?

This link gives you a variety of different ideas/ resources a teacher can use in the classroom integrating technology. One that caught my attention was Prezi - it offers teachers another tool to capture short lectures, explanations, or other content in a more visually appealing and personal way than as a disembodied voice or thumbnail in the bottom corner of a screen.

Another website you can look at is: Bring Creative Technology to Kindergarten Classrooms!
https://static.wixie.com/edu/kindergarten.php
you can create and assign a project and it is way easier for students to record their voice and add text. Using the Wixie program you don't have to find images elsewhere for your Kindergartners or worry about copyright laws when using images. Home We should recommend parents to spend one hour maximum two hours of screen time at home.
