My top five leadership essentials are outlined below, accompanied by explanations of their significance to me and how I strive to exemplify these principles to support and inspire others.
1.
Listen and Encourage Input
The term “active listening” means the ability to pick up, define, and respond accurately to the feelings expressed by the other person
(
Leadership Essentials - 2018 Revised Edition. PDF
. (n.d.)., p. 111). This is crucial for cultivating a community built on trust, understanding, and empathy. Creating such an environment not only makes team members feel valued and appreciated for their input but also serves as a catalyst for fostering innovation and providing an environment for success.
(Oedekoven et al., 2022.
p.112).
2.
Set Clear Expectations Effective communication has only occurred when the receiver understands the message (
Oedekoven, O. O., Lavrenz, J., & Robbins, D., 2018, p. 112). If communication lacks clarity and fails to provide a thorough explanation, team members may not fully grasp the objective or message. It is also important to ask to follow up questions to ensure everyone understands the message. Feedback is critical to ensuring that the message has been accurately received and understood. (Oedekoven et al., 2022. p.112).
3.
Simplify and Be Direct Information overload can happen when you are not delivering your message as direct as
possible. Providing positive and constructive feedback in a straightforward manner sets a positive example for team members and nurtures a culture of trust, especially when communicating challenging messages. 4.
Take Feedback Seriously Demonstrating your ability to provide direct feedback while also being open to receiving
it fosters positive behavior across the entire team. Team members will be more likely to share their ideas and criticisms in a constructive manner. There is a virtuous circle of feedback whereby the more you seek it, the less you can hide in bad behavior. (Oedekoven et al., 2022, p. 117).
5.
Affirm with Actions
If people hear one thing from you and see another, your credibility is shot (Leading Effectively Staff, 2023). Following through with your word is important to ensure you are
leading by example. When you consistently honor your commitments and stand by your word, people are more inclined to trust and follow your guidance with confidence in your abilities.

Definitions of the above on page 1
These articles explore leadership communication in contemporary settings through multiple lenses and research methodologies
Some disciplines such as management tend to promote the psychological perspective of leadership with individually centered communication o
Often with formal position power and research goals that emphasize adding organizational value
Other disciplines emphasize discursive leadership, where leaders emerge through socially
constructed reality. The latter perspective underscores shared, fluid leadership communication processes and highlights their discovery and impact on participants
Most scholars believe that leadership creates and manages meaning
. We follow Fairhurst (2009) to adopt Robinson’s broad interpretation of leadership. “Leadership is exercised when thoughts expressed in talk or action are recognized by others as capable of progressing tasks or problems which are important to them” (Robinson, 2001, p. 93)

The authors evoke both the psychological and discursive lenses by examining four principle dichotomies of leadership: managers versus leaders, the blurry distinctions between leadership and followership (or the romance of leadership), formal versus co-
constructed leadership, and science versus art.

December 7, 1941
US attacked by naval and air forces by the empire of Japan US was at peace and still in convo with its govt and emperor looking towards maintenance and peace 1 hour after convo , Japan commenced bombing.
Japanese delivered a reply to Americans , seemed useless to cont diplomatic associations Atack was deliberately planned Attacked cause severe damage American lives lost Ships were torpedoed btw San fran and Honolulu They attacked guam, hong kong, Philippines, wake island The facts speak for themselves and under stand implications He directed for all measures be taken for defense He asked for all nations to remember the character for the onslought against us
America will win victory!
Hello class, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation
, delivered on December 8, 1941, is still remembered to this day for several key reasons. His leadership communication skills were evident, highlighted by the impact of his compelling opening, the use of clear and direct language, and an emphasis on unity to the American people. Additionally, he maintained an authentic and genuine emotional tone, issued an immediate call to action, and delivered a powerful message that reached the masses through his radio broadcast. He ensured to convey
how serious yet somber this event was by ensuring the American people understood the call to action. He used his words clearly and concisely to rally the nation together in the face of adversity, while declaring that the United States would overcome the attack and emerge stronger than ever. This speech reiterated that it is so important to choose your words carefully and precisely. The average human attention span recorded in 2023 was 8.25 seconds (MPower, 2023). Maintaining an audience’s attention requires a captivating opening, a clear call to action, and authenticity and genuineness in delivering your message. Authentic leaders possess a genuine sense of purpose (Northouse, P.G., 2022). They understand their own values and base their behavior towards others on these values, while having the capacity to open themselves up and establish a connection with others (Northouse, P.G., 2022).
In the immediate future, I aim to dedicate more time to developing two specific attributes in my
personal leadership communication skills: Initiative and Humility. Specifically regarding the attribute initiative, I would like to complete more informal assessments for all work to help foster continuous improvement in the work place (Leadership Essentials, 2018, p. 15). This will ensure that all employees are consistently informed about their performance status, promoting
awareness and clarity. Specifically, regarding the attribute of humility, I will practice looking outward to attribute success and looking inward to apportion failure (Leadership Essentials, 2018, p. 16. My team serves as a mirror of my leadership, and their success is synonymous with mine. Moving forward, I commit to embodying this perspective in my daily approach to team leadership.
Sincerely, Kelsi Dean
