As an
elementary education teacher
, you will make decisions based on your knowledge of child
development continuously, many times without even realizing it. Over the years, child development
research and theory has shaped
early childhood education
and the decisions teachers make in
the classroom.
After watching the video below, describe a time when you observed what you believed to be
atypical development of a child in the physical, cognitive, or social-emotional domain. What
knowledge did you base this from?
Discuss the ways you will differentiate activities and make instructional decisions in your
classroom based on children’s developmental readiness.
I am a preschool photographer. I have worked with thousands of children from the ages of newborn
to 4/5 years old. During my off season and Covid, I have also worked as a preschool teacher. I have
observed many different ways children behave and communicate. As a photographer, it's very
important for me to be observing. As I go to the classroom and take the child from their regular
teacher and walk them to my area for pictures; I am observing their reaction to my voice and me as
a person. There are times when a child will come in front of my camera and within a few seconds, I
know they cannot stay focused. The teachers sometimes tell me ahead of time but mostly I can tell
immediately. Kids all have typical behaviors but when something is different; you can recognize it
right away.
As a teacher, I would definitely work with children at their own pace. All kids are different in their own
ways, just like we are. I always look at them as little people with big personalities. I would make sure
that each child is given an understanding of what their instructions are for an activity. Certainly, ask
and let them speak it back to me if they understand or if they do not understand. Class discussions
are important. I would not be one of those teachers that would write a class assignment on the board
and leave it at that. Working with kids is a gift. It takes patience, caring, passion and a great sense of
communication.
