Report
In the life of A Firefighter COMM120 Matt (2019)
Overview Will give a basic overview in the life of a firefighter, what a day to day consist of and kind of work they do. Review some an article to see some of the side effects the career can hold on an individual, as well as efforts to aid them in their struggles. Take the view of volunteers who commit their time and what personal commitment and rewards are gained from this effort
The day to day Firefighters life is a committed life not a simple 9-5 career. The schedule for firefighters often 24 hours on and 48 hours off. With that still have times where they will be called, always on standby to aid the community. The life of a firefighter is having two homes and two families. Those they have in their personal life and those on duty in their station. As stated by a firefighter, “We're here for 24 hours, so we live together, we work together, we eat together” (Miller. 2015) The work does not only consist of fire as the name states, they cover all calls from medical calls of just concern such as small sprains. To day long fire fights and severe accidents to aid and recover the community in need.

Stressors of the life In reference, the life of Firefighters has a strong demand on the physical demand in general, but as well as mental/psychological strain. (Marconato (2015)) Physical strain of the day to day training and physical demanding calls, as well as the elements such as fire and smoke they are exposed to Mental strain from sometimes horrific scenes coming from accidents and disaster casualties With the constant setting of being on call along being caught in prolonged events, leading to fatigue and sleep deprivation. Leading to serious medical issues from lack of care and exposure to elements.
Stressors of the life (cont’d) There is a harsh social effect as well on firefighters personal life such as their families. For example, “It’s tough being away from the kids on the nights I have to work, but I make the most of my days off.” (Miller (2015)) With the struggles comes long committed time to medical care from exposure of toxic elements to therapy to work with the psychological struggles exposed to and endured. The graph to the right displays data to certain domains available to those in the field in the respective area. Marconato (2015)
Commitment and Rewards Aside from being a stable career path with a sum of benefits, a majority are committed to the cause of the job as well as the satisfaction of aiding the community. Resulting into a career that comes with a full volunteer route to aid the community even not as a primary career. The commitment put forward comes with a great bit to help thy neighbor and to give back to a community one grew in. “Reasons include an intrinsic need to give back to the community, comradery, altruism, family history and a desire to ultimately become a career firefighter.” (Gazzale(2019)) The reward of having purpose and serving the community plays the biggest role to the individuals commitment in service despite the harsh hours, exposure, and strain. Showing how astonishing those in the field can be.
