A. Video 1. Writing a Cooperative Paragraph, English learners (ELs)—second grade
Video 2. Determining the Influence of Media on American Culture and Stereotypes Case number 203
Video 3. Learning About Cultural Identity case number 150
B1 In video 1, the teacher incorporated a cultural need by understanding and giving her English language
learners a different option to help them complete their assignments. For example, the students could speak verbally with a small group of their peers about the assignment. They were also given the option to have assistance with writing their sentences, and they were not required to read their paper out loud.
The instructor would also have the students as a group correct the sentence on the board to identify and correct the grammar mistakes. The teacher incorporated an emotional need by giving positive feedback to a student when he made an effort to spell a word by using the resources around him correctly.
In video 2, the teacher incorporated a social need in her group discussion over the influence of Disney movies in America. The instructor guided the assignment by asking the students different questions, such as thinking about how other cultures feel watching these movies. For example, a student showed social awareness when she connected that people from the Middle East might not like that Disney portrayed a Middle Eastern as a villain.
B2. The teacher in video 2 could have met the emotional need of the students by giving an alternative assignment to those students who may not be comfortable speaking in a group setting. This alternative option could have benefited the quiet students the instructor noted she had in class. The teacher in video 3 could have incorporated an emotional need by having the students give one another positive feedback after they presented their assignment. For example, when they sat as a class on the floor and discussed their ideas for similarities, positive feedback could have helped those students who were shy to speak out.
B3 One culturally sustaining pedagogy strategy that I observed in video 2 that I can incorporate in my future practice is the teacher structured the assignment to allow the students to discuss openly the influence of media and their opinion on how it affects society. The instructor used Disney to help her students connect with how the movies made other cultures feel.
Another culturally sustaining pedagogy strategy used in video 3 that I can incorporate in my future practice is the instructor used a puppet show to demonstrate Chinese culture. The puppet show was a fun way for students to listen and stay engaged in the demonstration. She then had the students pair up
and discuss similarities between their culture and Chinese, which helped them understand that they may have lots of differences, but they also do some things the same. B3a I will use the first strategy by using a source such as movies or social media platforms to help my students understand how the media can influence how a person views someone from another culture. I want my students to research and question diverse views and connect with them, such as how they think indigenous people feel about the movie Pocahontas. I will use the second strategy to help add a fun way for my students to connect with people from different cultures. For example, when learning about a different country, I will incorporate examples of how we are similar so that my students understand that we may not dress the same as other cultures,
but we might eat some of the same foods. I would use role-play to help my students understand the lesson. B4 For my first strategy, I will involve the caregivers by having my students ask them to discuss one example of how the media or a movie helped form their opinion of someone from another culture. This will help my students understand how people interpret the information they get from the media. My students will write a short paragraph or verbally give the answer to the class.
The second strategy I will involve the caregivers of my students by asking them to help the student make
an art project of one different and similar item we share with a different culture. Again, the caregiver can help the student come up with similarities that were not discussed in class. B5. The first strategy I would like to have my students visit a museum or another learning institution. I feel this will be a valuable way for my students to learn the history of other cultures without having the influence of movies or social media.
The second strategy I would research restaurants or markets that my students could visit to experience and learn more about the culture we discussed in class. For example, a Chinese restaurant will give my students the opportunity to learn and taste the type of food that the Chinese eat and compare it to what they eat at home.
