Desiree Ellison D186 Task 4 A. Teaching self-awareness skills is an important part of teaching. Educators should take the time to teach students how to handle emotions because it impacts their development, such as their self- confidence, strengths, weakness, and growth mindset. These tools also teach students how to recognize their behavior's impact on other people. Self-awareness skills give students the tools to recognize their emotions and how to handle them, which they can carry with them outside the classroom as well ( Spezzano, 2018). A1. An instructional activity that I can teach my students is color jars. This activity consists of a red jar for angry/hurt, a blue jar for tired/sad, yellow jar for happy/excited. Each morning my students grab their sticks with their names on them and place them in one of the jars. While they work on independent studies, I meet with the students who place their sticks in the red or blue jars. We discuss their emotions and thoughts and how we can get their feelings to the yellow jar. Once we have developed a plan and strategy to help them handle their emotions, I tell the students that they can place their sticks in the yellow jar when they feel their feelings are better. Letting students recognize the link between their feelings, thoughts, and actions will allow them to address the feelings (Positive Action, 2020). Another instructional activity is for my students to keep a journal. Each day I will reserve time for my students to write or draw in their journals their feelings and thoughts. I will also ask them to discuss their feelings about the lesson they learned that day. This is a way for students to acknowledge how they feel about their own learning and their strengths and weakness with the content. Learning journals provide a way for students to identify their emotions and recognize and manage their emotions. Allowing students to assess their emotions daily allows them to understand and explore their emotions (Positive Action,2020). B. Teaching self-management skills is important because it can help improve student performance, impulses, and stress in the classroom. Giving students these tools can help with self-motivation and independent learning. Self-management skills are the backbone of the classroom and skills that students will need to use daily (Durgin, 2022). B1. An instructional activity that I can incorporate in my classroom is checklists. Checklists are a great way for students to reflect on their learning, stay motivated, and set goals for themselves. I will also include my students in creating the checklist, so they feel that they are a part of their learning and awareness of the expectations and help eliminate some of the stress they may feel about the content. The list will include the lessons for the day and students' expectations; as they complete a task, the student will mark it off the list. Checklist help students stay focused on the task and demonstrate self- management skills. (Teachmint,2022) B2. Another instructional activity is developing a student agreement. A classroom agreement will contain rules and expectations for the students to follow. Like the checklist, I will have students be a part of creating the agreement. We will read aloud the agreement once a week so that students will remember its contents and stay motivated to follow the rules. Students will evaluate themselves at the end of the week and determine how well they followed the agreement. I will schedule one-on-one
meetings for students who did not follow the agreement to develop strategies to help them follow it. By allowing students to partake in these strategies, students feel empowered and take an active role in self- management and intervention (Positive Action,2020). C. Teaching social awareness is important because it informs students how to show respect, appreciation, and equality. Social awareness educates people to look outsides themselves, understand different perspectives, and learn how to co-exist with various individuals (The Social Emotional Teacher, n.d). It is important for teachers to educate students about social awareness in order for them to build positive relationships with their peers and community. C1. One instructional activity is identifying emotions in photos. The photos will have different emotions, such as happy, sad, and angry. I do this game at the beginning of the year and periodically throughout our reading lessons. I will raise the photo for the game and call on one student to identify the emotion. I will then discuss why they believe that person is feeling this way. During our reading lessons, I will ask students to study the picture and describe what they believe the character is feeling. Asking students why another person feels this way is a great way to practice empathy (Durgin,2022). Another instructional activity is opinion surveys. For some students understanding others’ opinions can be hard and shocking (Muriel,2022). I conduct these surveys throughout the year, especially for holidays. These surveys will be about different and fun topics such as favorite food, toy, or store. Each student will then read their answer, and as a class, we will discuss their opinions and likes and how we need to respect them. C2. An instructional activity for relationship skills in group activities. I try to include group activities with each lesson. This is a great way for students to build off each other’s ideas, learn to communicate, and build a healthy relationship with their group. Another activity I like to include in my classroom is changing seats. We change seats every three months in my classroom. This activity is a good way for students to learn to build new relationships with other students in their class. Group work and changing seats give students the opportunity to practice relationship skills and learn to work as team (Durgin,2022). This supports D. Teaching decision-making skills is important because, at a young age, students tend to make decisions based on emotions. Giving students the strategies to think about consequences and work through solutions will help them make rational decisions. D1. One instructional activity for decision-making skills is the make-a-choice game. We play this game periodically throughout the year, and in this game, the student will be asked a question like "would you rather be a fish or a bird?" After delivering their answer, the teacher will give consequences for their answers. This game is a way for students to make personal choices and understand that choices often come with consequences. Another instructional activity is a debate. This activity is always fun, and I try to incorporate it into our lessons multiple times throughout the year. For this activity, I have students pair up and give each a different topic to debate. Students are instructed to use critical thinking and support their ideas. This activity teaches students to respect others' choices and construct their own decisions on the same subject. Decision-making is a part of everyday life and using activities such as debate or choice game give students the tools they need to make life choices as they mature. (Makofsky,2012).
