Section Two : Audience and Purpose Extension Questions For the questions in the next section, examine how text elements such as word choice, tone, and supporting details are affected by audience and purpose. We asked ChatGPT (a generative AI writing tool) to rewrite the Spoke online article as an email from the author to her friend and classmate. This was the prompt that was used to generate the email: “ Rewrite this article as a personal email from the author to a fellow classmate”
Winter 2024 version Read the following email and compare it to the Spoke article by directly answering the questions (#4-7) below the text: Hey, I hope you're doing well! I wanted to shoot you an email and share some thoughts about our field placements. This experience has been such a game changer, and I thought you'd appreciate hearing about it. As we're getting closer to graduation, it's becoming increasingly clear just how important field placements are for us college and university students. They're like the secret sauce for beefing up our resumes post-graduation. You remember Kennedy Player-Reid, right? She's doing her thing over at Ryerson University as a sport media student. Well, she got the chance to do her placement with the Hamilton Bulldogs in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). She mentioned how the opportunity pushed her to break out of her comfort zone and explore new creative avenues. I totally get where she's coming from. It's not just about skills; it's about pushing those creative boundaries and thinking outside the box. What's fantastic is that these placements give us a chance to dip our toes in our field, like a little sneak peek into our potential future. For me, working with the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL has confirmed that this is exactly where I want to be after graduation. The real icing on the cake is the practical experience. Most job applications require some level of experience in the field, right? I'm convinced that every post-secondary school should offer some form of placement. It's like an express ticket to outshining the competition in the job market. Player-Reid also mentioned how her time with the Bulldogs allowed her to taste what full-time work is like. I can totally relate to that. Besides prepping us for the real world, these placements are like a turbo boost for our skill development. I went into mine feeling confident, but the skills I've gained since October have grown by leaps and bounds. Oh, and I've picked up some tips along the way. Managing your time properly is a must, never turning down a task, and giving it your all are just some of the lessons. Kennedy gave a gem of advice – always be open to opportunities. These placements open our eyes to the real world and expose us to aspects of our field we might not even know exist. To sum it up, field placements are a total game changer. I believe every college and university student should have the opportunity to experience this. It's not just about preparing us for our careers; it's about opening doors to new possibilities. Can't wait to catch up and hear about your own placement adventures. Thanks for always being an awesome classmate! Catch you soon, Kayla

State a clear purpose for this email, which is no longer a published article written for the public (Think: Why might she be writing an email to her friend; review examples of purpose in Weeks 2 & 3). Extension Question: Are the changes in supporting details, tone, and diction that you noted in questions 5 and 6 enough to make this an effective email for the intended audience? Do you think the topic, thesis, and purpose are suitable for an email to a friend or classmate? Why or why not? ( Think: is the language, word choice, structure, tone, and style the same as an email you would write to a friend?) Provide a specific example and explanation to support your response to receive full points. ( 2 points ) Yes, the variations in tone, phrasing, and information increase the email's value for a friend. The topic of field placements and their influence is still relevant and applicable. The change in tone and sentence structure, such as utilizing phrases like "reconnecting soon," fits the casual way of communication between friends, making the email more interesting and relatable.
