1. What is the specific problem with communication? As a firefighter, effective communication during an emergency response is vital. A specific communication problem arose when one of our firefighters from Puerto Rico was requesting ventilation of a facility during a training exercise. Unfortunately, due to the language barrier the message was not understood over the radio and the task was never accomplished. The request was made several times, but no one outside the facility was understanding the message. Communication is already difficult via radio transmissions and combining it with a language barrier is a difficult barrier to hurdle. 2. Does the problem represent an example of one of the barriers that the articles that Dr. Rani and Lumen Learning identify? If so, which one(s)? Yes, it represents Dr. Rani’s language barrier. As an Air Force firefighter, we work with allied members from all over the world and even have units in Puerto Rico. I am currently deployed with a 12-man team from Puerto Rico which has caused language barriers to be at the forefront of our struggles. Additionally, environmental barriers played a factor into the problem. Being in a high-stress environment with radio communication is a massive barrier for high-level communication. 3. What are some possible communication strategies in notifying someone about the problem? A communication strategy to notify someone of the issue would be to notify our Assistant Chief directly of the problem. He will be able to dissect the problem and come up with potential solutions. Also, notifying the members with broken English in a direct, yet culturally sensitive manner would ensure they understand we are not currently communicating effective. Stressing the importance of effective communication

would highlight it is not a personal matter, but rather an issue that needs to be address for the community we serve.
