Kimsoja’s
“A Beggar Woman” & “A Homeless Woman”
is the artwork I reacted most
strongly to among all the videos. However, the reaction was negative. Homelessness
affects several people today, and it is also considered a trauma. It can make people
commit suicide, lower others’ self-esteem, and is even associated with mental health
problems. Watching the video, I imagined myself spending each night in the streets, in
the cold, especially in winter, and waking up with no money to buy food. Thus, I am
forced to go to the nearest garbage can and spend the rest of the day in the city, hoping
somebody will see me and help me out. Alternatively, like in this artwork, begging for
money, trusting that someone will be kind enough to give me something. It is so sad.
2.
The artwork is about a woman begging in the city. The woman was sitting in the city
square, and she had a very tiny body (
Kimsooja). Her hands were stretched out, asking
people for money. On the other hand, the homeless woman is about the same woman
sleeping on the street. What repelled me about this artwork was the people’s reactions.
The woman was sleeping in the street, and no one bothered to help. There was a crowd;
however, they were only watching, with some trying to wake her up, but no one did
anything concrete to help her out. This artwork shows how the world is broken.

Question 3:
I think Parker is trying to defy the notion that only idealized female bodies have a place
in art. Society in general, not just in art, has put a lot of pressure on women, on what they should
look like and even who they should be as a person. The female beauty ideal traits, in most
societies, include but are not limited to hairstyle, body weight, skin tones, eyelid shape, body
shape, modified facial features, and clothing style. As a result, women have undergone numerous
body and facial alterations, ranging in severity, to attain such traits. Some, especially youths and
women who cannot afford these expensive procedures or surgeries, have resulted in extreme
dieting and exercise, adversely impacting their health and overall well-being. Parker’s
Folkestone Mermaid
shows that everyone has a place in art regardless of their body shape, size,
weight, or skin color. Therefore, in my opinion, Parker’s work shows the beauty of being
different; she encourages women to accept who they are regardless of their imperfections.
