Abstract
Mental illness among youths in Canada has been on the rise. This research paper explores causes
for this trend. The research utilizes qualitative research methods and samples youths from
various communities in Canada to respond to questionnaires and to be part of the interview. The
findings show that poverty is one of the major cause of mental illnesses among youths in
Canada.
Introduction
Mental health in Canadian youths is one of growing concern today. Research shows that an
estimate of one in five people in Canada will experience a form of psychological health problem
in life. At the age of 40 years, around 50% have experienced or are experiencing a mental
disorder. As an example, 5 percent of Canadian people are affected by anxiety and a good
number of deaths in youths are as result of suicide. Approximately 24.1 percent of the people
who are working struggle with psychological health issues. This has costed the society a great
deal. Research shows that the overall cost of mental disorders to the economy of Canada is more
than 50billion dollars annually. This present a great influence on the labor market of Canada.
Mental disorders also influence Canadians in all facets of their lives including their families,
personal relationships, their physical health and their ability to study or work. This research
paper discusses the issues and challenges faced by youth with regard to mental health illness
among youths in Canada.
Literature Review
Issues and challenges faced by youth with regard to mental health include various behavioral,
emotional and cognitive problems that may lead to distress or worry (Kirmayer et al 2011). In

essence, issues concerning mental health influence a person’s thinking, feeling, and behavior.
Owing to the social, biological and psychological changes in young people, they are the most
vulnerable group to mental health issues. The most common issues of mental health in Canadian
post-secondary students are anxiety, depression, Attention Deficit Disorder(ADD) and Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), drug abuse and addiction, and eating disorders among
others.
Anxiety refers to a feeling of unease, nervousness, and worry about something with unsure
result. Everyone gets nervous and worried at some point in life. The postsecondary Canadian
youths. Some anxieties can be good. For example, getting anxious before an exam, public
speaking, or interview can motivate a young person to prepare well. It is normal for
postsecondary students to worry about how to join college and how to fit in with peers, etc. these
worries may be illogical to young adult but should not be trivialized (Kirmayer et al 2011).
Anxiety turns into a concern when the feelings become constant and influence a person’s ability
to function in daily situations negatively. A young person is said to have anxiety disorder when
their anxious feelings become constantly severe, become consistent after a distressing experience
or event, and are stressful to an extend that the interfere with the person’s ability to socialize,
learn and function well in daily activities.
Depression plays a great role in daily lives of Canadian youths. It a form of mood disorder. while
it is normal for a young person to feel down or sad, a consistent depressed mood is something to
worry about. A depressed person is characterized by being constantly depressed, sad and in
grouchy mood. They show little or no concern over things they once enjoyed doing. They
withdraw from their family and friends, become upset over petty things, lose or gain weight,

suffer insomnia among others. Depression in most cases onset in childhood. It is triggered by
particular stressful events of life but it can also be linked to genetics.
Drug abuse and addiction is also another issue concerning the mental health of Canadian youths.
People use different substances without any sort of problem (Elliott, Huizinga & Menard, 2012).
However, substance use become an issue when youths use them to cope with anxiety, stress or
depression. Excessive use of drugs influences a person’s ability to function well negatively. Most
Canadian youths abuse drugs like Cannabis, alcohol, cocaine, ecstasy, hallucinogens, heroine,
inhalants, among others. Drug abuse and addiction can be a very dangerous and burdensome
health problem. Actually, drug abuse and addiction problems are psychological health problems
regardless of the characteristics, gender, race, or age of the affected person. This issues causes
the affected person both physical and emotional health issues.
Research Methods
Research Design
Qualitative Methodology
A well-defined research methodology is necessary for every research project since it helps
specify the procedures that will be followed throughout the study's data collecting, analysis, and
interpretation phases. The research strategy relies entirely on the study's research questions and
anticipated results. If a researcher wants to build knowledge and ideas, they will need
information that can't be reduced to numbers, and that comes from seeing and studying how
people think.
3.3 Sampling
5
Youth population from different communities in Canada will be the respondents. The selected
youths will take part in filling out the questionnaire.
Data Collection
For this study, questionnaires and interviews will be used. The use of questionnaire is the most
suitable approach when dealing with large numbers of people.
It is possible to gather data with
high objectivity and high precision in a short amount of time if questionnaires are issued and
filled out at the same time by all respondents.
Data Analysis
The data collected will be analyzed using Excel and SPSS and using descriptive statistics, an
understanding of mental health illness among youths in Canada will be arrived at.
Findings
Poverty and employment were related to poor mental health, but young adults with persistent
probelms in poverty used fewer mental health services. In contrast, insurance was unrelated to
mental health status among young adults but highly related to mental health care. The stratified
analysis indicated among young adults with persistent severe problems, those in the upper two
quintiles of income were more likely to use any mental health care compared to those below 125
percent. And among young adults with persistent severe problems in poverty, mental health care
use is concentrated in 60 percent of this group.
Discussion
This study contributes to our understanding of the persistence of mental health problems among
young adults living in the community, and to what extent young adults access to mental health
6
and other medical health care. Identifying young people who are likely to remain in poor mental
health is important because of the critical timing of the problem in their lives: young adulthood is
a critical time for decision making regarding role and lifestyle choices and for role transitions in
employment and social relationships. By using young adults living in the community, rather than
a care-seeking or patient population, I was able to study the mental health and health care of
young adults who have not been diagnosed with a problem and are not currently in treatment. By
using multiple dimensions of mental health, my findings provide a different, perhaps
complimentary, analysis to research that examines change in one disorder over time. Examining
use of mental and other medical care among youth with mental health problems provides a better
glimpse as to care-seeking patterns for this demographic compared to examining only mental
health care use.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Canadian youths are faced with various issues and challenges
with regard to mental health. These issues influence a person’s thinking, feeling,
and behavior. They include anxiety, depression, drug abuse and addiction, and
eating disorders among others. To address youths that are experiencing mental
illness crisis, the police requires specialized training. Some existing program that
offer specialized police training include basic police training program, Crisis
Intervention Team (CIT) program, advanced training for MHMCT police officers
program, Innovative training program, and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA).
These programs help the law enforcement officers to gain a comprehensive
