The Power of Positive Thinking
Specific purpose: To persuade my audience that when people fully embrace the ideal of positive
thinking they are more able to cope with difficult situations and health concerns that can normally
be quite debilitating or even fatal.
Central Idea/Thesis statement: To demonstrate that positive thinking has the ability to help a person
heal and cope with adversity.
Introduction:
How would you feel if I told you I was going to take away 7.5 years of your life today? Something
tells me that I wouldn't be making any new friends by this comment. By thinking negative thoughts
you are in fact doing this very thing to yourselves according to recent studies conducted by
researchers at Yale University. It's a proven fact that those people

"Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." Recent studies in psychology
have proven this quote to be true because the mind can affect the way that we perceive the world
and hence our biology as well. Knowing what we now know about the true power of positive
thought it would be foolish to continue blindly along filled with our gloomy thoughts when these
very thoughts are slowly but surely reducing our remaining time in this word with each negative
thought and comment that passes through our mind. That why I would like to end by making you a
challenge. Whenever you start to think negatively you should try to come up with at least three
positive thoughts about the thing that is causing you to think negatively. Who knows, this practice
might be saving you a countless number of precious years that are irreplaceable.

Positive Value Of Positivity
In the midst of adversity, positivity can be described as a way of being or having an optimistic
attitude and behavior. In the words of Walt Disney "I always like to look on the optimistic side of
life, but I am realistic enough to know that life is a complex matter." Though Disney has undergone
backlash regarding the depiction of the Polynesian god in the film Moana and criticism of
patriarchal culture in Disney's Enchanted. There is still many positive effects his films have on
children today. The issues of equality, self–acceptance and faith can all be seen in Disney's work.
His viewpoint states that while having a positive mindset is beneficial, an individual should not be
naive to the fact that life isn't always what we want it to be. Positive thinking is like a muscle.
However, the only difference is that it gives you a mental workout. The more you exercise it with
positive thoughts, the stronger it will become. Now don't get me wrong, it's not possible to think
positively all the time. However a larger part of your thoughts should manifest good will and virtue.
Therefore, I believe one should embody the value of positivity rather than the opposing value of
negativity. Real positive thinking works by enforcing ways of managing internal or external stress.
Some of my ways of managing internal stress are by praying, thinking hopeful thoughts, listening to
music, socializing with family or friends, and something I like to call "me–time". Otherwise known

Numerous new age and pop psychology authors and so–called experts insist that you should always
frame your goals and affirmations in the positive because your unconscious mind "only thinks in
positives". So instead of thinking that you want to "lose weight" you are supposed to focus on being
"fit and healthy at my desired weight".
A similar pronouncement that is very popular right now since the publication of The Secret is that
you are supposed to always feel good, because all negative emotions are vibrationally bad! So if you
are feeling bad then you should immediately find something that makes you feel good to focus on...
This is going to shock many of you: Many very successful people regularly use what may appear to
you to be negative statements and negative motivation with extremely positive results! And many
many people can trace the day they turned their life around to the day they experienced a negative

Do not build up obstacles in your imagination. Instead tear them down by tearing them apart. Do not
compare yourself to others. Get a competent counselor to help you understand why you do what you
do. Learn the origin of your inferiority and self–doubt feelings which often begin in childhood.
Self– knowledge leads to a cure. Practice self–affirmations, for example, Yes, I can. Or I can do all
things through belief in myself. Take an inventory of all the things you have going for you and begin
to really appreciate your assets. Health, eyes, hearing, friends, family, son, house, shelter, food,
income, transportation, intelligence etc. In the second chapter, the author talks about having a
peaceful mind.
The essence of the secret lies in a change of mental attitude. For this, one must learn to live on a
different thought basis, however thought change requires effort. A life of inner peace, being
harmonious and without stress is the easiest type of existence. A primary method for gaining peace
is to practice emptying the mind. Thus, practice emptying your mind of fears, hates, insecurities,
regrets, and guilt feelings. After you have emptied your mind of all the old, unhappy thoughts
immediately start refilling it with creative and healthy thoughts. The mere fact that you are

Positive thinking
Everyone has probably heard that positive thinking is important when confronting obstacles, but
positive thinking can do much more than keep us focused on a goal. The power of positive thinking
can be used in a variety of ways to help us reduce stress, stimulate our mind, help us become more
aware of who we are and build our confidence. It can improve our perspective on situations making
us a better problem solver and leader for others. Over the next few minutes I will explore how a
creative activity like self–talk can be used to improve personal and professional performance
allowing us more control over our emotions to make better decisions and solve problems with
greater success. Before I talk about the benefits of self–talk though, we need to first look at the
power of negative thinking and why it's so important to recognize it and change it to positive
thinking.
Negative thinking happens more times than you think if we think about all the times we listen to our
thoughts in our head. These can be negative thoughts or ideas about anyone, even ourselves and they
can impact us in a way that only creates more problems and obstacles for us to overcome later.
Some of the results of thinking negatively can cause us to stress out or make us suffer from
unnecessary anxiety, this can impact our daily life giving us less motivation to reach our goals and it
can reduce our quality of life. The good news is that this negativity doesn't have to be a permanent
problem.

Positive Thinking And Negative Thinking
Simply, positive thinking is the opposite of negative thinking. Positive thinking might take place in
your mind, when you feel happy or when you have achieved something you have been wanting to
achieve for a while. It's a little voice in your head (the one that's reading these words), that can put
us in a more positive frame of mind on a day–to–day basis as we go about our lives.
Positive thinking is also one way a person can experience the feelings of positive emotions such as
joy, happiness, excitement.
It may also put a smile on our faces and a bounce in our step, and make us look forward to things
more.
Whether one has positive thoughts or negative thoughts, our minds are occupied with thoughts and
depending on some factors, for some, positive thinking occurs more often than for others. But the
great thing is that positive thinking is a skill that can be taught, learned, practiced and mastered such
as you would be taught sports, practice music, learn a new language or master a subject.
Positive thinking can also become a Mind Set which is the next level of just having positive
thoughts from time to time. A Positive Mind Set is such that the majority of your thoughts will be
positive. And again for some people, the opposite may be true, but through proven steps, tools and
practice, anyone can reprogram their mind to counteract negative thoughts and a negative mindset.

setting. Individuals with a positive subconscious mind think about opportunities, development,
improvement and victory. They always assume to receive joy, fun, affection and excellent

I. Thoughts Are Energy
Today, the power of thoughts is known to many people – and many a one changes his life positively
by putting this knowledge to use. But the power of thoughts is often misused to achieve selfish aims.

is. So here's the first key. What is positive thinking?
1. What is Positive Thinking? Positive Thinking is truth–based thinking. It is truth and reality based
thinking.
If someone says that they are "useless at everything", the reason that this is negative thinking is
because it is not true.
If they actually literally were useless at everything, they would simply accept the fact and they
would be working from a position of truth and reality. The reason we get upset is because we know
it isn't true. We know we aren't showing all of our true selves and strengths.
Fear–motivated "Positivity"
What people call "positive thinking" is often rose–coloured glasses thinking, and more interesting is
why one would be motivated to see things unclearly, even if seemingly overly positively.
Let's use an extreme example.
If we think that the view that we can't lift a ten tonne truck, or run 100 metres in a second, is
negative thinking, then we have a distorted view of what positive thinking is, but why do we?
The resistance people have to seeing the truth and reality of a situation the way it actually is usually
belies an underlying negative thought of their own; what is it that is so inherently not okay with my
life that I have to take an overly – unrealistically – optimistic approach to things? What is driving

religious teachings and cultures emphasizing the pursuit of such nature to the extent that even the
Declaration of Independence of the United States recites that "all men are created equal [and] that

emotions equal to a greater happiness. The psychologist Martin Seligman (2003), professor at the
University of Pennsylvania and one of the leading researchers in the field of Positive Psychology

pointed out three basic theories of happiness: Hedonism Theory, Desire Theory, and Objective List
Theory. The Hedonistic theory points out that "all pleasure is intrinsically good, yet temporary" and
comparatively, the Desire theory claims that if an individual gets what they primarily desire, they
will be happy (Seligman, 2003, para. 3). On the other hand, the Objective theory suggests that
human happiness occurs due to number of events that are worthwhile to achieve, such as career,
family and freedom (Seligman, 2003, para. 4).
Overall, the complex human emotions and needs seem to be pointing towards one direction, which
is to be happy and satisfied, indeed. However, the path of achieving it has been quite rough and
edgy, resulting many to theorize about different ways to achieve a long–lasting happiness and

Positive thinking is a center of many good benefits. There are many ways to use positive thinking to
change a person's life. It is not just for making one feel happy or experience a positive attitude; it is
a source that he or she uses to benefit oneself. It is a source that an individual uses to create a
happier and meaningful life.

from engaging in activities that are active with friends. He continue that simple activity such as
