2 COM 100 (Personal Reflection) Perception denotes a process by which an individual easily interprets and makes sense of sensual data from the immediate environment. Typically, perception encompasses selecting, establishing, and inferring sensory input such as smell, sound, and sight so as to create meaningful comprehension of one’s immediate environmental settings. Mr. Stevenson’s book “Just Mercy” provides a superb analysis of perception through a scene that involves Mr. Stevenson, a lawyer, paying a visit to Avery, his client who is being held in the prison. By thoroughly analyzing the scene which involves Mr. Stevenson pulling into the prion’s parking lot, one is better positioned to draw multiple conclusions affirming stage one of the perception process. The prison’s description, initial reactions, and comparison to expectations stand out as key elements affirming that Stevenson is in stage one of the perception process. Upon his arrival, Mr. Stevenson can effortlessly describe the prison’s surroundings in detail as the environment differs from normal surroundings. There’s a high possibility that Mr. Stevenson will describe the presence of guard towers, barbed wire, and high walls within the prison, thus affirming that he was choosing and attending to pictorial stimuli within the prison surroundings. The prison’s ambience also infringes on mixed reactions to Mr. Stevenson, thus creating an uneasy feeling for Mr. Stevenson. The distinct smell of the prison, unceasing sounds of metal gates clanging, door locking, and whispers from both inmates and prison staff trigger curiosity in Mr. Stevenson as he tries to compare the prison’s environment to normal conditions. The highlighted elements affirm that Mr. Stevenson was in stage one of the perception stage as he gradually processed sensory data and linked information to his prior knowledge.
