Week 8 Discussion: Family
I was raised in a nuclear family that comprised of my parents, three older brothers, and
one younger sister. Typically, my parents had their hands tied to working and giving their best to
ensure the family is flourishing. Within the family, I played a crucial role of clowning where I
use humor most of the time to mediate any conflict within the family (Usera et al., 2021). For
that matter, I usually tend not to be offended or show feelings to family members but always
lighten the moment. I would make peace during conflicts between the siblings. This role greatly
impacted the manner in which the family handle issues, interacted, and stay out of conflict most
of the time.
My family treated Sunday dinners as the most important ritual. During this period, the
family would gather and spend precious time around the dining room and enjoy delicious food
that everyone partook in cooking from the family. This session was very important as it united
everyone, led to effective bonding, and share their life experiences.
I am planning to have a family in the future. I would prefer to have some similar and
different versions of my future family to my present one. For instance, I prefer a nuclear family
in the future. I also plan to have a stable and supportive family just like my current one.
However, I plan to raise a family is knows and practices open communication and inclusion of
everyone in decision making processes of the families, without power imbalances.
