Factors that Affect Communication with Individuals and Group
Effective communication and professionalism are essential for successful
interprofessional collaboration in healthcare. The "Taking a Close Look at Protocols" simulation
provided valuable insights into employing effective communication strategies and maintaining
professionalism even during challenging interactions. Analysis of this scenario facilitates critical
reflection on my collaborative nursing practice. This paper examines communication techniques
demonstrated in the simulation, analyzes a lived experience using conflict resolution strategies,
reflects on professionalism observations, and discusses unproductive unprofessional behaviors to
display. These key lessons will guide my continued development of professional
interprofessional skills to optimize teamwork and patient outcomes.
Effective Communication Strategies Demonstrated in "Taking a Close Look at Protocols"
Three techniques that demonstrated effective communication in the "Taking a Close Look
at Protocols" simulation included active listening, paraphrasing, and asking open-ended
questions. The nurses and physical therapists in the scenario used active listening skills by
maintaining eye contact, nodding, and allowing others to finish speaking before responding.
Paraphrasing was used to clarify understanding, such as when the physical therapist summarized
the nurse's concerns about increasing the patient's pain level with mobility. Asking open-ended
questions allowed the providers to gain more information from each other, like when the nurse
asked the physical therapist for details about the patient's progress in therapy.
Lived Experience Using Effective Communication Strategies
In my own experience as a nursing student, I witnessed effective communication and
conflict resolution during a disagreement between a nurse and a nursing assistant regarding a

patient's hygiene care. The nursing assistant felt the patient needed a full bed bath, but the nurse
wanted to provide a partial bath to prevent fatigue. To resolve this, the nurse used active listening
when the nursing assistant explained her rationale and then paraphrased those concerns. The
nurse asked open-ended questions to understand the nursing assistant's perspective better.
Together, they devised a plan to provide focused hygiene care on the areas most soiled while
considering the patient's energy levels. This improved their teamwork through compromise.
Professionalism Reflection from Simulation
The simulation demonstrated how important it is for healthcare professionals to maintain
composure and professionalism, even when disagreements arise. Rather than becoming defensive
or argumentative when concerns were raised, the providers in the scenario exhibited
professionalism by remaining calm, actively listening, and using respectful language. For
example, the nurse responded professionally when the physical therapist questioned the patient's
pain management plan. She avoided escalating the situation and sought to understand the
physical therapist's perspective through open communication.
In my collaborative practice, I can apply strategies like assuming good intentions, taking
a team approach, and focusing discussions on optimal patient outcomes to demonstrate
professionalism. Even during tense interactions, I will keep an open mind, collaborate with my
colleagues, and maintain a respectful demeanor. This will help build trust between team members
and cultivate an environment where providers feel comfortable addressing patient concerns.
Maintaining professionalism is essential for effective interprofessional teamwork and optimal
care delivery.

Two unprofessional behaviors demonstrated in the simulation were making assumptions
and questioning competency. The nurse made assumptions about the physical therapist's
understanding of pain management rather than seeking clarification. This can lead to
miscommunication and must be more consistent with others' perspectives. Additionally, the nurse
questioned the physical therapist's skills, damaging team trust. Publicly questioning a colleague's
competency is disrespectful and unproductive, even when concerns arise. These behaviors
promote defensiveness and erode collaboration. Instead, concerns are better addressed privately
by providing constructive feedback to maintain mutual respect. Assumptions should be avoided
in favor of open communication. As a nursing student, this simulation revealed how making
assumptions and attacking competency are unprofessional and prevent effective teamwork. I will
avoid these behaviors by maintaining respect, communicating openly, and addressing concerns
professionally to build trust. This fosters a collaborative environment focused on quality care.
In conclusion, the simulation illustrated effective communication strategies like active
listening, paraphrasing, and asking open-ended questions. My experience aligns with the
module's emphasis on compromise and understanding different perspectives to resolve conflicts
professionally. Maintaining professionalism through collaboration and avoiding unproductive
assumptions and attacks builds trust and ultimately benefits patient care. These lessons provide
valuable guidance for my continued interprofessional development as a nurse.
