Personal Reflection
Cultural competence is a process which begins with a thorough examination of our inner beliefs,
values, biases, and preferences. These are all embedded in our culture; whether we know them
or not, they are part of who we are. Recognizing our biases allows us to reflect and, hopefully,
undertake the process of awareness and understanding of differences. To understand, in this
context, is to recognize that other values and beliefs are different than ours, which we should
examine by making a conscientious effort to hold judgment.

After completing the survey, answer the following questions in essay format:
o
Share two (2) things you have learned about yourself and your understanding of culture
from this week’s readings – Cite evidence from your readings
o
What two (2) things do you need to work on based on your readings? – Cite evidence
from your readings
o
Share two (2) ways can learn more about yourself and others with different backgrounds
o
Share one (1) way you will use the information learned in this class and from this survey
to strengthen your cultural competency.
From this week's reading, I learned that I can interact with and celebrate many traditions
with some defined connections in my life. An interpretation of this back up the Christmas
celebration in my family, where we always have an outing before Christmas day. My family would
all unite at my grandparents' house and have a Thanksgiving party as a united family. In this
level, we would decorate the day with a tree that resembles the Christmas tree. During this
session, I would interact with other family friends with the motive of enjoyment and knowing each
different culture as we share a common experience that shapes members understanding of the
world. The knowledge I acquire from weeks' of reading and interactions on culture includes
origin, nationality, race, gender, and religion. Also, I can gain an understanding of family
traditions and how most set thoughts create alterations in individual reasoning.
Based on the week's reading, I prefer to work on things that can eliminate bias on
children's matters and how the preference can be altered in my tradition. Even though I am trying
to make changes, it is good to consider my kid's interests critically. Though kids have diverse
interests, my favoritism for them comes as a priority, and I prefer spending more time with them
to minimize the bias and neglect level. Most of these ideas make the interaction level change the
child's character level.
To learn more about myself, it is effective to ask my family about the effect of analyzing
my culture on gender and nationality. However, one searches over the internet to learn more
about different backgrounds. For instance, the book lists six barriers to effective and appropriate
intercultural communication, which gives similarity to the difference that occurs through
ethnocentrism and nonverbal misinterpretations (
Jandt, 2017)
. The internet makes it easy to
know more about a personal background as there is an interactive session and survey which
allocates for an exceptional understanding of different types of people in the society and their
culture and educational background.
I can use the information I have learned in this class and the survey to strengthen my
cultural competence, where I have to interact with different people to know their traditions and
culture. However, I can integrate what I have learned in this class with patients I see daily to
provide my family with the utmost care and respect.
