Whitaker EDUC 380 Before this assignment, I did not know that personalized learning existed. Before starting my research, I thought it was a branch of differentiated instruction. However, personalized learning and differentiated instruction differ on the fundamental basis of who is choosing what is learned. Differentiated instruction is a teacher-driven method of teaching the same subject from a set curriculum in different ways to all students. Personalized learning is different from the beginning. The curriculum and learning goals are discussed and agreed upon by both instructor and student. Personalized learning is also project-based, not test-based. Students work in the environment and learning conditions that suit them. I am most excited to share with teachers that personalized learning makes it so that every student can succeed academically. When students are learning what they are interested in, in a way that interests them, at a pace that suits them, they are bound to flourish. This topic has helped me grow as an educator because it is forcing me to critically think how these methods can be applied to a school system in which there is a required curriculum. This is also another tool in my tool box of teaching methods. Page 3 of 3
