EDUC5270 Hi Class, Constructivist learning theory bases its operations on the idea that students build knowledge based on prior knowledge and maintains that there is no knowledge that is independent of the learner only that which they create for themselves based on the data they gather from their environment (Fosnot & Perry, 1996). Constructivism advocates letting students come up with their own solutions rather than providing a predetermined one. Some successes I may achieve Due to the constructivist-based educational methods' propensity for being more accepting of many cultural backgrounds, I will be able to encourage diversity. I will be able to emphasize sensory input more thanks to constructivist teaching methods, something that many traditional educators have long neglected. More and more teachers are realizing that students need to be fully engaged in the learning process, using all their senses, in addition to their ears and eyes. In previous times, learners were expected to sit through lessons, make journal recordings, and take tests, and some of these activities still occur in the modern learning environment. Students must actively participate in tying the educational process to their surroundings in order for it to be meaningful to them (Bright Hub Education, 2022). Constructivism will make sure that I am able to recognize and meet the requirements of students with special needs, such as those who have sensory processing disorder or who are autistic, in special education settings (Bright Hub Education, 2022). There will undoubtedly be students in special schools in the future who have outstanding minds but can't be reached by conventional approaches. Instead of just providing material, I'll function more as a mentor who engages the students in the learning process with me and challenges their preconceived notions. Some challenges I may face While some kids need highly organized environments to succeed, constructivist-based instructional strategies lack structure. Constructivism integration would require me to abandon standardized curriculum in favor of a more individualized study plan based on what each student currently understands, which could cause some kids to lag behind other pupils. Additionally, I won't be able to grade kids in the conventional manner; instead, I will place more emphasis on their ability to assess their own progress (Bright Hub Education, 2022). This could cause students to fall behind, but without standardized grading and evaluations, I might not be able to tell if a student is having trouble. Because there isn't a traditional evaluation in place, the student might not be producing new knowledge as the theory suggests; instead, he or she might simply be copying what other students are doing.
The steps I will take in overcoming these challenges. I will also create learning assignments that had value for the kids, were open-ended, and developed the abilities for independent and collaborative learning as I work to shift my practice toward a more constructivist approach. Where possible, I will use open-ended, collaborative learning exercises with many entry and exit points. Therefore, a lot of the teaching that was done was responsive and was done one-on-one or in small groups as the students worked on these tasks and the teachers moved around to monitor and address the learning requirements of individuals and groups. That is not to mean that there won't also be explicit teaching given to the entire class in the form of justification, illustration, and the usage of scaffolds and models (Le Cornu, R., & Peters, 2005). How I have been storing artifacts into my Google Drive and why I chose that medium Each week I make journals and save them in Google Drive. I have created folders for each of the courses I have taken so far in the MEd program. In the folders, I save weekly documents containing information about takeaways (what I have learned). I organize the information on my local hard drive using Microsoft Word and then I save the file in a Word Document format with a unique name (eg. Week 1 Artifact: Inquiry-Based Learning). After that, I log in to my Google Drive and upload it. I use Google Drive because I only need to upload the artifacts in a Word Document or PDF format, which I organize offline using Microsoft Word at my convenient time. This is convenient, secure and less cost for me. It is expensive to organize documents online, as internet data is costly to purchase in my country. It is convenient to use, as I need to just organize my artifacts offline at any time I wish, and upload them later. References Bright Hub Education (2022).
