LAB REPORT 6
Lab title:-Extraction by steam distillation
Name :
Name:
-Simranjeet kaur
kaur (100721225)
Date:-25 March 2019
PURPOSE:-
The purpose of this experiment is to isolate eugenol from cloves by using steam distillation technique.extract
technique. Extract
the distillat
e with dichloromethane
as well as concentrate it.
PROCEDURE:
1)
Firstly crush 10 g whole cloves in a mortar and pestle and then transfer it into a 500 ml round bottomed flask with 150 ml of water. Add some boiling chips into it.Then start up the steam distillation process. After
process. After
completing the distillation process collect the distillate into labelled container for ne
xt week.
2)
From distillate, extract the clove oil by using extraction.to remove the dichloromethane from clove oil, the
simple distillation
was done.
STRUCTURE
OBSERVATION:
Weight of vial=9.86g
Weight of clove oil and vial=10.62g
Weight of clove oil=weight of clove oil and vial –
weight of vial
=10.62g-9.86g
=0.76g
OR 760 mg
%recovery
= (amount
of clove oil/amount of crushed cloves)
*100
= (
0.76g/10.0g)
*100
=
7.6%
DISCUSSION:
1) The
distillate from the steam distillation was turbid in the early of distillation
because it contained condensed water and it is insoluble with it which
results in a turbidity.
The amount of clove oil obtained from steam distillation was 0.76g which shows functional group on IR spectrum
as O-H at 3500cm

.
Due to some error found
in steam distillaton
during experiment ,
the calculated % recovery was 7.6%
.
CONCLUTION
: -
The estimated amount of cloves oil to be 500 to 750 mg whereas the collected amount of clove oil in this experiment is 10 mg more than
it should be this was
due to some error found in this experiment.
