Mod 1: Field Notes Module 1: Field Notes Arizona State University SPE 527: Behavior Analytic Assessments 13 January 2024 Module 1: Field Notes
Mod 1: Field Notes Throughout the first module’s materials, we covered the importance and need for maintaining and building competence culturally and within the field (Mayer et al., 2022, p. 1- 20). Maintaining competence throughout cultural sensitivity, trainings, research and sensitive contact with parents, guardians, and clients are beneficial ways to stay within the boundaries set forth by the BACB and the companies that we will are work with to provide services. The writers of Behavior Analysis for Last Change discussed the importance of a mission, meaning what you and your organization are representing (Mayer et al., 2022, p. 1 - 20). In the first Webinar (2023), helped bring ABA principles from the Task List (5 th Edition) and the BACB Ethics Code into a personalized definition that encompassed the overall ABA goal of improving behavior while stating a mission (Blumberg, 2023). Building off the definition of ABA that was provided in the Webinar (2023), our readings discussed outlines for interventions to achieve improving and changing behavior. In the Cooper readings for the week (Blumberg, 2023), the authors stressed the importance of maintaining competency beyond culturally. Staying informed on new intervention procedures, updated assessments, and treatments are great ways to maintain competence. While expressing the importance of constantly learning new techniques and interventions, the Behavior Analysis for Lasting Change reading reminded us of the behaviors we are supposed to be applying the knowledge that we are learning now and will continue to develop throughout our careers (Mayer et al., 2022, p. 54-79). The readings in both books discussed the importance and details of socially significant behaviors or behaviors that would make to most difference (Cooper et al., 2022). Cooper et al., (2022) discussed how we, as behaviorists, could determine what observed behaviors should be focused on first or determined to be the target behaviors – whether it’s to increase or decrease a
Mod 1: Field Notes behavior. I found the most key element to be the behavior that would expand the client’s reinforcement and access, either through functional communication skills or social interaction. The age of the client, as stated in the Cooper book (2022), is related closely to this determining factor. If the client is suffering more from deficits in social interaction more than independent living skills and they are not at an age where they need to learn how to balance a checkbook, then practicing social skills would be determined that target behavior (Cooper et al., 2022). Within this chapter of the reading, parent and guardian input was also discussed. During the process of treatment, caregivers may place higher importance on deficits that the behaviorist. Conflict between caregivers and providers can be maladaptive for clients (Cooper et al., 2022). Taking this information into account is another reason for us to practice cultural competence and individualize our clients’ services (Mayer et al., 2022, p. 54-79). Task List Items (6 th Edition): E.9, E.10, E.11, F.1, F.2, F.3, I.1 & I.6. Ethics Code Items: 1.03, 1.04, 1.05, 1.07, 1.10, 2.01, 2.08, 2.09, 2.13, 2.14, 2.15 & 2.18.
