Mod 3: Filed Notes Module 3: Filed Notes Arizona State University SPE 527: Behavior Analytic Assessments 28 January 2024 Module 3: Filed Notes
Mod 3: Filed Notes Throughout this week the course module has guided us throughout preference assessments and positive reinforcement. Understanding the concept of reinforcement is key to conducting and implementing preference and reinforcement assessments. Matching law was not discussed this week, but behavior flows where reinforcement goes. Positive reinforcement is key and vital to making applied behavior analysis effective (Cooper et al., 2022) (B.4, B.12 & B.13). (F.1, F.2, F,4 & F.5). If positive reinforcement is to be widely applied throughout ABA, must be understood by all practitioners. The Cooper text (2022) discussed the contingencies needed for a reinforcer to occur, all with the opportunity or occurring naturalistically or contrived. As discussed in previous weeks, reinforcers and positive reinforcement act as a two – term contingency (Cooper et al., 2022) Once a practitioner fully understands what a reinforcer is, one can start to comprehend what key factors make a reinforcer more effective. The Cooper text (2022) discusses the immediacy of a reinforcer being important, if a reinforcer is delivered too late, its effect will be less. The role of motivation, satiation or deprivation, is emphasized as well. If a learner is satiated, the reinforcer may be less effective (Cooper et al., 2022). Building off this, the four functions of behavior are related to reinforcement: automatic reinforcement, escape, access, and sensory stimulation. I found the next portion of the text to be most intriguing, the concept of the Premack Principle. The Premack Principle falls under the response – deprivation hypothesis, the use of “first, then” statements to create a state of deprivation helps increase the effect of the reinforcer. I happen to find the use of the Premack Principle to be very effective for clients that are younger and require more structure (Cooper et al., 2022) (F.1, F.2, F,4 & F.5).
Mod 3: Filed Notes The most pertinent take away from this module was the preference assessment portion, the Cooper text (2022) and the Webinar (2024) dive deep into the different types of preference assessments. As we discussed in the comprehension check for this module, there are two broad categories: direct and indirect. Indirect assessments are conducted as interviews and on paper without the collection of empirical data. Direct assessments are conducted in five different forms, they are conducted in a discrete trial training environment and allow learners to select possible preferred stimuli (Cooper et al., 2022).
