BUSD 2015– Payroll, Winter 2022 Assignment One:
Employee vs. Independent Contractor
Read the following situations carefully. Each situation identifies a person. Your goal is to determine the
Employment status of each person (employee or self-employed / contractor) in each situation. To
support your conclusion, you will be using the Canada Revenue Agency’s guidelines for Deciding a
worker's employment status in a province or territory other than Quebec. Your discussion should take
into consideration the Steps followed by CRA to determine this. You can do some research for ideas.
However, you cannot copy and paste from sources directly onto the assignment. If you want to support
your ideas by using quotes from websites, ensure to properly cite your sources. Directly copying from
website(s), without proper citations or credits, will be considered academic misconduct and will result in
receiving a grade of zero for this assignment. You can make reasonable assumptions to support your
arguments.
My scenario (question) is following
Rosie is a dentist. She is working at a Dental office which is owned by another dentist and her friend.
Rosie goes to her friend’s clinic three times a week and sees the patients that are booked by the clinic.
Sometimes, she refers patients to the clinic who were her patients at a different clinic and even
establishes the fees charged to patients. Rosie also works for another clinic and is not required to work
during established hours. Rosie is paid based on productivity, as she receives payments for seeing each
patient at the clinic. Rosie wants to know if she is an employee or contractor at her friend’s clinic.
