Report
Diversity Leadership University of the People Prof. Pamela Clark (Instructor)
- Introduction - Our 5th Unit of the course BUS 4405 "Leadership" focuses on the concept of diversity in the workplace, and, in particular how leaders can leverage diverse workforces aiming for the best organizational outcome(s). In this particular written assignment, I am going to first introduce the concepts of diversity in the workplace and why it is so important, then I will shift the attention to a global2000 leading world business company to further conduct an analysis of how its leadership deals with diversity and how it leverages it. - Body - How Mcdonald's Leverages Diversity Scott DeCarlo identifies, in its Forbes article named "The World's Leading Companies", those businesses that are currently operating as the biggest, most powerful entities in the world (DeCarlo, 2010). McDonald's is one of the World's Leading Companies; the American fast-food giant founded as a small restaurant in San Bernardino on the 15th of May 1940, has completely revolutionized the food industry by introducing automated chained production strategies into the food industry; this principle is still at the base of every fast-food restaurant (McDonald’s, 2017-2022). Let's focus, however, on how McDonald's leadership leverages diversity policies into the business core. Inclusion and diversity are important matters at McDonald's; Indeed, the goal of the organization is to have people working, living, and striving to reach their full potential (McDonald’s, 2017-2022); The leaders of the company have made every effort to diversify the hiring criteria and the recruitment process to hire all types of potential applicants based on their respective abilities, values, perspectives and unique strength to promote diversity and to harness such a pool of talents to increase productivity and profitability (McDonald’s, 2017-2022). McDonald's culture is founded on the inclusion and diversity of the forces, from the counter crew to the Board. McDonald's leaders work shoulder to shoulder with diversity and include team members towards common business goals (McDonald’s, 2017-2022). The diversity department supports completely the core business policies and practices, and it constantly organizes internal coaching, mentoring, and educational courses that are open to every employee in the organization. McDonald's also supports more than 120 employee networks for the respect and inclusion of ethnic groups, working mothers, young professionals, and many more (McDonald’s, 2017-2022). Facts, however, speak more than words, at McDonald's women and minority US employees are 70% of the working population; among these about 25% of the leaderboard is guided by women and minorities; about 45% of McDonald's franchise businesses are held by women/minorities in the US respectively (McDonald’s, 2017-2022). Diversity in the workplace is a very actual concern, and its importance has never been as
strong as now! Cultural diversity in the workplace can be defined as when employers are open and keen to hire employees, collaborators, and workers regardless of religion, gender, culture, and all sorts of background (Rice, n.d.). This diversity of cultures, religions, genders, traditions, languages, backgrounds, knowledge, and experiences, benefit a company in several aspects... Diverse workforces are richer in talent and are free from restrictions; furthermore, the business environment can benefit from wider and, at the same time, more direct insights into the customers' needs, requests, and motivations (Rice, n.d.). Generally, open-minded work environments and leadership that leverages diversity are more effective, more successful, and, consequently, more profitable (Rice, n.d.). - Conclusion - Among the benefits provided by a strategic leveraging of diversity in the workplace, we must cite how diverse workforces contribute to greater productivity, wider sets of skills, and self- gain processes (Rice, n.d.). Companies that leverage diversity gain learnings from each of their employee's behavior, cultural background, experiences, and application to their task(s). Employees too constantly learn from each other in work environments that have a strong diversity, as different colleagues contribute with their experiences, give different perspectives, bring innovations, and improve problem-solving skills (Rice, n.d.). Cultural diversity also promotes an increase in creativity and a greater ability to resolve any kind of problem which may occur; the coexistence of so many different minds in the same workplace also reduces employee turnover, and improve self-commitments as well as engagement (Rice, n.d.).
