5.02 Natural Selection Virtual Lab Report Instructions: This lab is found on the last page of your 5.02 lesson. As you progress through each slide of the Natural Selection Virtual Lab Activity, please fill in this lab report with the appropriate information and data. Submit this lab using the instructions on the bottom of this lab report. Lab Title & Student Name: Include the name of the lab and your name Objective(s): All 3 are listed on screen #1 of the virtual lab . Describes or summarizes the purpose of the experiment…you should be able to get a feel for what the experiment is going to be about Hypotheses: You will make your 2 hypotheses on screen #6 of the virtual lab . There will be one for the light environment and one for the dark environment. The hypotheses should make a prediction of the outcome of your experiment. Light Environment Hypothesis: Dark Environment Hypothesis: Variables: Independent - what you change, Dependent - what you measure (data), Controlled - stays the same Independent Variable Dependent Variable Controlled Variable(s) Materials: 1. The Natural Selection Virtual Lab Activity 2. Natural Selection Virtual Lab Report Procedures:
The procedures are listed in Natural Selection Virtual Lab Activity. You do not need to include them here. Data and Observations: Complete the simulation in the virtual lab. You will maneuver the predator to the rabbits and click to eat them. Record the survival percentage rate for both the white and brown rabbits in both the light-colored and the dark-colored environments for each generation. Table 1: Rabbits in the light-colored environment Gen 1 2 3 4 5 Table 2: Rabbits in the dark-colored environment Gen 1 2 3 4 5 Data Analysis: Use your percentages in part 1 and this google sheet to easily create your digital graphs that represent the rate of survival for the white and brown rabbits in each type of environment. When you open the google sheet, input your data into the tables on the left and it will create the 2 graphs for you in the white boxes on the right. To submit your graphs, use one of the following options: 1. Click on your completed graph and then click the 3 dots that appear in the upper right corner. Choose “copy graph” and then paste each
one into the boxes below. 2. Use your snipping tool or a screenshot to paste your graph images in the boxes below 3. Upload your google sheet as a PDF into the assignment with your lab report. 4. You may also create your own graphs on paper, but don't forget to consider the relationship between your data and the type of graph to best represent that. Light Environment Graph: Dark Environment Graph: Conclusion: Be sure to address the 4 bullet points below as a paragraph summary in the conclusion of your lab report. Type your summary into the box below: Were your hypotheses supported or rejected? Be sure to include data that you collected as evidence to support your conclusion. Using the data in Table 1, explain which color rabbit had the higher rate of survival in the light-colored (white) environment and why this occurred. Include numbers from your data for both colors of rabbit. Using the data in Table 2, explain which color rabbit had the higher rate of survival in the dark-colored (brown) environment and why this occurred. Include numbers from your data for both colors of rabbit. Look at your data for both environments. Which color of rabbit seemed to camouflage best overall ? Explain your answer using evidence (numbers) from your data. Questions: Using what you have learned in the lesson and the lab, answer the following questions in complete sentences. Do not copy and paste from any source! Your answers should be in your own words to avoid being flagged by Academic Integrity. . 1. How did the colors of each type of prey affect its population size over time? Address each color of rabbit in your answer.

2. How do you predict the data would change in each environment if you continued with more generations? Address each color of rabbit in your answer. 3. What traits would help a predator to be more "fit" to survive in each environment? Be specific. 4. Describe other adaptations, besides color, that could affect the prey’s survival. 5. Explain what will happen if there are not enough resources to support the individuals in a species. 6. This experiment tested natural selection. Explain another possible mechanism of evolution for the rabbits to evolve. Be specific. Review the mechanisms on pg 6 in the lesson *Submit this document on your 5.02 assignment. One easy way to do this with a google doc is to go to “File” in the upper left corner, scroll down to “Download”, and choose “PDF Document” from the arrow menu. You can then drag the PDF into the student file box on the assignment, or you can click Add File and upload it from your Downloads folder.
