BSC1005 Unit 4 Climate Change - Scientific Literacy Project Let’s exercise our scientific literacy and reasoning skills to determine if you would buy a product that is marketed to you using science claims. Instructions: Work on this assignment independently. Please answer each question with complete sentences and proper grammar. Type your answers. Learning Outcome: Students will implement scientific literacy skills by applying course content knowledge to validate statements from secondary sources. Total points possible: 80/80; The assignment is 5% of your total grade and is mandatory. 1) Look at this meme that was posted on Facebook. What is the claim of this meme? (5 pts) The claim of this meme is that acidification of the ocean is comparable to osteoporosis in humans. Osteoporosis is when bones become fragile due to new bone creation not keeping up with old bone removal. Essentially, osteoporosis breaks down and thins bones as ocean acidification prevents species that have shells to become thinner and more fragile. 2) Using information from Unit Climate Change, Module 1, explain ocean acidification using the key terms: atmosphere, water, carbon dioxide, pH, and ocean acidification. Write in 2-4 complete sentences. (10 pts) Ocean acidification is when the pH value of the water is reduced. Ocean acidification is cause by carbon dioxide dissolving into the ocean. The increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is due to humans and is a main cause of ocean acidification. 1
BSC1005 Unit 4 Climate Change - Scientific Literacy Project 3) Looking over Figure 1 (provided below), what is a) the overall relationship between atmospheric and oceanic CO 2 levels (3 pts) As atmospheric CO2 levels are rising, the oceanic CO2 levels rise as well. As seen in the graph, sometimes there is overlap of oceanic and atmospheric levels of CO2. b) the overall relationship between oceanic CO 2 and oceanic pH levels? (3 pts) As oceanic CO2 levels rise, oceanic pH levels decrease. Ocean acidification is the result of this relationship. Figure 1. Relationship between atmospheric and oceanic dissolved CO2 levels and ocean pH (taken from https://ugc.berkeley.edu/background-content/ocean-acidification/ , after Freely et al. 2008) 2
BSC1005 Unit 4 Climate Change - Scientific Literacy Project 4) (a) Using a search engine (e.g. Google), find 2 sources that explain the effect on ocean acidification on marine life such as such as phytoplankton algae, invertebrates, and vertebrates. Cite the 2 sources you using a) author or institution of the website, b) title of the website/article and c) the URL/link for each. Do not describe the content of the sources in this section. (4 pts) Citation 1: The Ocean Portal Team Reviewed by Jennifer Bennett (NOAA). (2019, June 20).  Ocean acidification . Smithsonian Ocean. Retrieved from https://ocean.si.edu/ocean-life/invertebrates/ocean- acidification  Citation 2: Effects of ocean acidification on Marine Species & Ecosystems . Oceana USA. (n.d.). Retrieved from https://usa.oceana.org/effects-ocean-acidification-marine-species-ecosystems/  4) (b) Identify if the source is a primary or secondary source. Justify why you consider these sources to be “reliable scientific sources.” (10 pts) i. Citation 1: This is a primary source that I consider to be reliable because it was written by a team of people who specialize in ocean studies and reviewed by a scientist. ii. Citation 2: This is a primary source I consider to be reliable because it was published by an organization that specializes in protecting the ocean and was reviewed by an ocean council. 5) From your research in Q4a, discuss (not just list) the effects on marine life such as phytoplankton algae, invertebrates, and vertebrates (give at least two examples ). Include the type of organism(s) and how they are affected . (10 pts) 3

BSC1005 Unit 4 Climate Change - Scientific Literacy Project Organism 1: Oysters are affected immensely by ocean acidification. Their shells dissolve due to the acidification and sometimes larvae fail to even begin to grow their shells, which usually takes place within a 48 hour time period. This has already caused mass amounts of oyster larvae to die off. Organism 2: Sea snails, or pteropods are affected by weakened and dissolving shells. Pteropods are a vital part of marine life as these animals feed many other animals such as whales. Sea snails are dying out due to their compromised shells, which will eventually lead to other marine life dying out as well. 4
BSC1005 Unit 4 Climate Change - Scientific Literacy Project 6) Organize the information you learned about ocean acidification. Based on your knowledge of climate change, carbon dioxide, ocean acidification, the peer reviewed graph, and the statements you wrote in questions 2-6, what information did you find that supports the meme and/or what information did you discover that is against the meme. Place the information in the either “Evidence in favor of the claim” or “Evidence against the claim” in the following table: (both sides need not be equal and at least 5 must be written) (15 pts) Write the claim from Q1: Evidence in favor of the claim Evidence against the claim Generally, shelled animals—including mussels, clams, urchins and starfish—are going to have trouble building their shells Young sea urchins have been observed to grow slower and have thinner, smaller, misshapen protective shells when raised in acidified conditions in more acidic water, just like the corals. Mussels and oysters are expected to grow less shell by 25 percent and 10 percent respectively by the end of the century. This means a weaker shell for these organisms, increasing the chance of being crushed or eaten Young sea urchins have been 5

Overall, what is the pattern of the evidence in relationship to the claim? Write in complete sentences. (5 pts) The pattern is showing truth of the claim. The evidence is providing support of the claim in the meme, that ocean acidification is comparable to osteoporosis. 8) Based on your course work, research, and your analysis of the gathered evidence, do you believe the claim in the meme? Why or why not? In 3-4 sentences, justify your decision. (15 pts) I do believe the claim in the meme. I believe the claim because one of the main effects of ocean acidification is the weakening or break down of shells and coral, which is essentially what osteoporosis does in humans. The article Ocean Acidification | Smithsonian Ocean proves the claim to be true by saying “This means a weaker shell for these organisms…” I believe that the meme is true based off of evidence from both articles and basic knowledge of what both ocean acidification and osteoporosis is. 6
