LAB 3 Cellular Morphology and Staining Techniques Lab Report (25 pts Total) PHOTOGRAPHS OF YOUR WORK 12 points Submit a photograph from stained culture slide that YOU VIEWED through the oil immersion lens. Cute and paste the photographs on a separate sheet for this purpose. For each photograph, make sure you label the name of the organism, the type of stain used, and the total magnification at the point you took the photograph. You will use additional pages for this part of the assignment. Point breakdown for EACH Photo: Name of organism 0.5pts Name of stain 0.5pts Total Magnification of organism 0.5pts Discernable bacteria 0.5pts. QUESTION SECTION - 13 pts **Use an additional page, if necessary, to record your answers to these questions** 1. How can classification methods learned from Labs 2 and 3 be helpful in a medical setting? (2pts) 2. In the context of electric charges, provide an explanation in the differences between how acidic and basic dyes work when staining a bacterial cell. Indicate whether methylene blue is an acidic dye or basic dye. (2pts) 3. Provide the 2 main reason(s) you would use a negative stain. Is nigrosin an acidic or a basic dye? (3pts) 4. Research Question: (5pts) Name your chosen career path: _____________________________________ (1pt) Explain why the ability to identify microbes is important to your career path. Provide an example based upon either a case study or personal experience. (2pts) Provide the support information for your explanation. The citation of supporting information must come from a reputable source such as NCBI, NIH, WHO, any pertinent professional journal. (2pts) It only stains area surrounding the organism and are useful for organisms that can’t survive a heat source. Nigrosin is an acidic dye. A basic dye is positively charged so it stains the inside of a cell while an acidic dye is negatively charged so it stains the outside area of a cell. Methylene blue is a basic dye. neuropathology Being able to classify organisms is extremely useful in aiding the development of better medicine, like antibiotics, and helps medical professionals better understand those organisms Please see next page
4) As of now anything related to neurology is not as widely known as anything else in medicine . The brain is a very complex organ that is still widely misunderstood and understudied. Scientists are currently looking into gut microbiota and the relation it has to neurodegenerative diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Alzheimer’s disease.
