Medjina Ilsaint BSC 2005 M1 Writing Assignment: Hypothesis Testing and Experimental Design Question: Does the appearance of the pumpkin have any effect on whether or not a squirrel will eat it? Null Hypothesis: If a pumpkin is smiling and another is frowning, there will be no difference in the amount of squirrels eating it. Alternative Hypothesis: If a pumpkin is smiling than more squirrels will eat it compared t the pumpkin frowning. Variables: The Dependent variable will be the number of squirrels who will eat each pumpkin because it is quantitative and is representing a numerical result of the study. The independent variable will be the types of expression on the pumpkins because it is qualitative and categorical based. Experimental Set-up: In my experiment I will get 3 different pumpkins, but all will be the same size. Before the experiment, one will be carved with a smiling face, one will be carved with a frown, and one will not be carved at all. At the same time everyday for 5 days I will put out the pumpkins for about 2 hours next to a tree by my house and observe how many squirrels eat from each pumpkin each day. After the 2 hours are up I will record my data and repeat this for 5 days straight. Among the treatment groups are a pumpkin that has been carved with a smile, a frown, and one that has not been carved at all. In order to determine whether or not squirrels recognize faces or simply desire to eat, the control group would consist of pumpkins that had not been carved in any way. Both the weather and the location are going to be factors that will need to be controlled in order to maintain consistency. I will select a tree that is located close to my house and frequently visited by squirrels. I will commit to using the same tree for the duration of the five days. and I will look up the weather forecast and select a week that has a series of days that are consistently sunny.
