Film analyst: Norman Bates is a masterful creation of director Alfred Hitchcock, who used various cinematic techniques to create suspense, horror, and sympathy for the character. Hitchcock used camera angles, lighting, music, sound effects, editing, and dialogue to manipulate the audience’s perception and emotions. For example, he used low-angle shots to make Norman appear small and vulnerable, high- angle shots to make him appear menacing and powerful, and close-ups to show his facial expressions and reactions. He also used shadows, darkness, and contrast to create a sense of mystery and danger around Norman and his mother. He used the famous screeching violin score to heighten the tension and shock during the murder scenes. He also used cross-cutting to show the parallel actions of Norman and his victims, such as when he cleans up the blood after killing Marion. He also used misleading clues and red herrings to divert the audience’s attention from the true nature of Norman’s psychosis until the final reveal. Hitchcock also used psychoanalytic concepts and references to explore Norman’s personality and backstory, such as when he talks about his hobby of taxidermy or when he quotes his mother’s words. Hitchcock also used irony and humor to create contrast and relief in some scenes, such as when Norman smiles nervously after saying that he wouldn’t hurt a fly. Norman’s case demonstrates how Hitchcock was a master of suspense who knew how to use film as an art form to tell a compelling story.
