One possible scene to analyze from Psycho is the parlor scene, where Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) invites Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) to have dinner with him in his office behind the motel. This scene reveals a lot about Norman’s character and his relationship with his mother, as well as foreshadows the horror that awaits Marion. The props in this scene are very symbolic and suggestive of Norman’s personality and motives. The most prominent prop is the stuffed birds that adorn the walls of the parlor. These birds represent Norman’s hobby of taxidermy, which implies his fascination with death and preservation. The birds are also predatory and menacing, such as owls, hawks, and crows, which contrast with Marion’s name and suggest that she is prey for Norman. The birds also create a sense of claustrophobia and entrapment, as they surround Marion and Norman in the small room. Another prop that is significant is the painting of Susanna and the Elders that covers the peephole through which Norman spies on Marion in her room. This painting depicts a biblical story of a woman who is falsely accused of adultery and sentenced to death by a group of lecherous old men who lust after her. The painting suggests Norman’s sexual frustration and guilt, as well as his twisted sense of morality and justice.
