The editing of this scene also creates tension and suspense by using various techniques such as shot- reverse-shot, close-ups, cross-cutting, and match cuts. The shot-reverse-shot technique is used to show the conversation between Marion and Norman, as well as their reactions to each other. This technique creates a sense of intimacy and involvement for the viewer, as well as a sense of conflict and opposition between the characters. The close-ups are used to show the expressions and emotions of the characters, as well as some details that are important for the plot or the theme. For example, there are close-ups of Marion’s eyes, which show her curiosity and fear; Norman’s mouth, which shows his nervousness and anger; the stuffed birds, which show their threat and symbolism; and the painting, which shows its relevance and irony. The cross-cutting technique is used to show the parallel actions or events that occur in different locations or times. For example, there are cross-cuts between Marion eating in the parlor and Norman watching her through the peephole; between Marion preparing to take a shower in her room and Norman carrying his mother to the basement; and between Marion being stabbed in the shower and Norman running to clean up the crime scene. These cross-cuts create a sense of continuity and causality, as well as a sense of contrast and irony. The match cuts are used to show the transitions or connections between different shots or scenes that have similar shapes or movements. For example, there is a match cut between Marion’s eye after she dies and the drain of the shower; between the shower curtain being pulled back and the window curtain being pulled back; and between Marion’s car being submerged in the swamp and Norman’s face smiling at the camera. These match cuts create a sense of coherence and symbolism, as well as a sense of shock and surprise.
