Literacy Across the Curriculum Part I: Reflect I chose to use Symbaloo, as it is a curation tool that allows me to save online resources as a simple tile link to the curation, which is what is required by the assignment. I have never used this tool, nor any of the curation tools linked in the overview. This is a statement I make every assignment and demonstrates that I am an archaic teacher who needs to move into the twenty-first century. Symbaloo was easy to use. All I had to do was enter a website and then use the extension tool to add it to the curation. A downfall of using Symbaloo is that a picture represents the site, rather than words, so unless you hover over the symbol you cannot tell what information you will be accessing. Another downfall is that there are character limits. The hardest part was deciding what websites to add to the curation. I curated a diverse collection of resources and organized them by general theme, such as diverse learners, vocabulary sites, and reading and writing ideas. I did not overfill the tool for easier navigation.
Part II Document 1. Link to the curated collection: https://www.symbaloo.com/shared/AAAAAgTelGAAA41_Ho- GUA== 2. Screenshots illustrating my digital curating experience. Setting up initial activities in Symbaloo. This included setting up a username and search engine preference. Creating a new webmix, which is Symbaloo’s term for page of links. I named it Literacy Across Curricula. Symbaloo also has pre-made webmixes for educators. Activating the Chrome extension to link webpages to Symbaloo. Demonstrating how to use the Chrome extension. The name on the tile is limited in character length. Symbaloo allows editing of tiles, to change the pictures, in case you have multiple webpages from one main source. The final layout of my Symbaloo webmix. It is organized by theme.

Part III Connect InTASC teaching standards “stress that teachers build literacy and thinking skills across the curriculum" (Burden & Byrd, 2018, p. 60). Teaching literacy across the curriculum can support diverse learners by increasing their abilities in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. As George Sampson once wrote , “Every teacher is a teacher of English because every teacher is a teacher in English” (1922). In the United States, English is the language in which classes K-12 classes are taught, therefore every teacher needs to teach literacy skills, such as vocabulary and grammar, to help students understand the material and demonstrate learning. Better literacy leads to “improved self - esteem, motivation and behaviour” as well as “raises pupils’ attainment in all subjects” (Ofstead, 2011). Teachers can foster this by seeing all students as literacy learners, creating a welcoming and challenging environment, offering a range of materials, using active learning, and collaboration (Kluth & Chandler-Olcott, 2017). Digital curation is one way to use active learning. Students can create their own digital curations to sort and analyze information presented to them, which causes them to use critical-thinking skills and help them become better problem solvers (Raemont, 2021). As primary sources of information have now moved online, digital curation is also a way for students to identify and gather relevant data and organize it. Further, the process of curation itself demonstrates how information can be linked together. There is a digital divide for diverse learners, however, not only regarding socioeconomic status, but also regarding race, gender, and cognitive abilities. ITSE promotes solutions to the digital divide through community involvement, such as mobile hotspots, and libraries, churches and businesses having open doors with free Wi-Fi access (Randles, 2021). Other solutions include adapting the technology used by providing transcripts or audio, and using Universal Design Learning (Krueger, 2022). Promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) classes to females, African Americans and Latino students is another way to cross the digital divide.
