J419: News story (CPS) Directions : Edit this story, checking facts as well as grammar, punctuation and AP style. The story is fictional but names and places are real. Think about what the news is and decide whether the story is structured well; if not, move or cut information. Note any questions you have for the writer. On Monday, Feb. 8 at about 9:00 a.m. the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office received a report from a social worker of a possible child neglect situation in Eudora. The social worker was acting on a call received from an elementary school teacher. Deputies responded to a house on the edge of town to check on the complaint. If the story is supposed to be referencing this year, Feb. 8 was on a Wednesday. Is there more information about the call that could be included? “Upon arrival, deputies found three minor children alone in the residence,” Sherrif Jay Armbrister said. “There was no heat, conditions were filthy, and the children had not eaten for two days.” How do we know this? The three children, ages 9, 7 and 6, were removed from the home and placed into emergency foster care. “While deputies were attempting to make contact with the parents, Child Protective Services were contacted to make arrangements to take the children into care,” Armbrister said. A CPS spokeswoman said that staff are investigating whether the children have relatives that they could be placed with. “The sheriff’s office removed the children from the situation,” Armbrister said. “The parents have been identified but CPS is still trying to reach them.”
Reports are being forwarded to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office for the consideration of criminal charges.
