Rhythm either very regular or very free, stronger beat 1) Opera – drama that is sung to orchestral accompaniment, usually with scenery and costumes. 2) Oratorio – sizable work for chorus soloists, and orchestra, usually on a religious topic, that is performed without scenery, costumes or acting. 3) Cantata – a vocal composition in several movements for solo voices, instruments, and usually a chorus; it is usually based on a religious text. 4) Chorale – a stately hymn tune used in the German Lutheran Church 5) Recitative – a style of singing that covers its text expressively, usually in an economical and direct way 6) Aria – an accompanied solo song, in an opera 7) Chorus – a section of music performed by a large group of singers. 8) Melisma – in vocal music, a passage of many notes sung in one syllable 9) Libretto – the text of an opera 10) Overture – the instrumental introduction to a ballet, opera, or oratorio 11) Basso ostinato / ground bass – a variation form in which a bass line is repeated over and over while the melodies above it change. 12) Basso continuo – a bass line for keyboard and a bass instrument. Also the name for players given the bass line and figured bass. 13) Figured bass – a shorthand system of numbers and accidentals used by keyboard players in Baroque music for indicating chords.
14) Fugue - a composition in which the main theme (subject) is presented in imitation in several parts. 15) Stretto – in a fugue, overlapping entrances of the fugue subject in several voices simultaneously. 16) Pedal point – a note that is held for a long time despite changes in harmony. 17) Counterpoint / Contrapuntal – 2 or more independent lines with melodic character occurring at the same time. 18) Toccata – a showy work usually for a keyboard instrument. 19) Suite – 1) a collection or group of stylized pieces of dance music 2) a collection of parts of a larger work such as a ballet or opera. 20) Concerto grosso – a multi-movement work contrasting a small instrumental group with a large (tutti) group. 21) Concerto – a multi-movement work consisting of music that contrasts a soloist with an orchestra or band 22) Tutti – with all voices or instruments performing together 23) Cadenza – a section in which the soloist plays a free paraphrase on the themes of the work 24) Chamber music – instrumental music in which each part is played by only one player, small groups, 2-9 players 25) Sonata – 1) a Baroque multi-movement work for solo instrument 2) a multi movement work for piano solo or piano and another instrument. 26) Trio sonata – a Baroque sonata written for two players on melody and the basso continuo bass line. 27) Terraced dynamics – abrupt changes in levels of loudness
