Discussion Forum Unit 1 Choose and identify your favorite work of art. Your choice can be from any time and place and can challenge the traditional definitions of art. What visual qualities make this item your favorite? Include in your discussion, as appropriate, descriptions of the artist’s (or creator’s) use of formal elements such as line, shape, color, space and other design elements. You may wish to include a link to an image of your chosen item (if available) to assist your classmates in their participation. A few months back, I visited the Van Gogh exhibition in Washington, DC. He just so happens to be one of my favorite painters, and when I read about his life, I was enthralled by his character and life story. I discovered a lot about his work and the different periods in which he painted. My favorite piece of art is Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night. A post-impressionist artwork, that is. I find this artwork to be visually intriguing because of the contrast between the tiny village and the whirling stars in the night sky. In contrast to the original image, the colors seem to convey the scene's emotion more accurately. The little town, which projects steeply into the sky, is visible as the swirling stars and night sky down the hillside. A dark tree in the left foreground is the only other dark object in the image. The position of the stars in this painting illustrates a real patch of stars, with one interesting exception: Sirius B, a white dwarf star that cannot be seen with the naked eye, is not included in the patch of sky. This is one of the most fascinating facts about this painting that I have ever heard. Van Gogh somehow felt the star's existence. I don't have a source for this information, but I remember reading this in the exbibit. Reference: Wikimedia Foundation. (2022, August 25). The starry night . Wikipedia.
