Module Two Question 1 Describe one of the beliefs and values of the Navajo as illustrated in your readings. One of the main beliefs and values of the Navajo is to understand people's motives, because explaining those can lead them to help solve problems. Module Two Question 2 Describe one way in which the Navajo have incorporated their beliefs and values into the societal structure on the reservation since regaining some autonomy in the 1970's. The Navajo have incorporated their beliefs and values into their societal structure on the reservation through their medicinal practices. Historically, Navajo spiritual leaders (who can be men or women) have led their tribes, and they have been believed to provide a connection between the people and the gods. Thus, Navajo healers do not only provide medical services for their communities but spiritual and cultural guidance as well. Module Two Question 3 What beliefs and values can be found in your culture? How do these beliefs and values influence your day-to-day life? Americans commonly believe in the "American Dream", that anyone who works hard enough will be successful and wealthy. Underlying this belief is the American value that wealth is good and important. I grew up to have this instilled in my everyday work ethics with not only my job, but family as well. Which is why I decided to go back to school to further my potential career and better my family's life too. Module Two Question 4 Adopt the social science perspective to create a list of questions about this issue. Write at least two questions each from the point of view of a psychologist, a sociologist, and an anthropologist. 1. How are hate crimes in America related to race, class, and gender? 2. What are the common connections between inequality, deviance, and hate crimes?
3. Why has there been such a gradual incline in the number of hateful incidents in recent years? 4. Do demographic factors, like the size and relative political power of minority groups influence the reporting of hate crimes? 5. Which ethnic group of individuals seem to be affected most by hate crimes in America? 6. Do people who commit hate crimes deliberate on and plan their attacks more than those who would commit a more spontaneous crime?
