Concept explainers
In one of the little-known battles of the Civil War, General Tecumseh Beauregard lost the Third Battle of Bull Run because his preparations were not complete when the enemy attacked. If the critical path method had been available, the general could have planned better. Suppose that the project network below with activity times in days had been available. Determine the earliest start and finish times, latest start and finish times, and activity slack for the network. Indicate the critical path and the time between the general’s receipt of battle orders and the onset of battle.

- The Farmer's American Bank of Leesburg is planning to install a new computerized accounts system. Bank management has determined the activities required to complete the project, the precedence relationships of the activities, and activity time estimates, as shown in the following table. Use POM- QM to analyze this project. The project must therefore be expedited. The possible reductions and associated costs are shown in the table. Times in the table are given in weeks. Only activity 4 can be expedited two weeks. The other activities can be expedited one week. (a) Determine the critical path(s), the expected duration of the project, and the slack time for each activity (indicate value on network)? What is the total project cost with penalty included? (b) How could the project time be reduced to 11 weeks and what is the total project cost? Your plan should identify the activity by their beginning and ending nodes and by short, descriptive titles. Estimate the times to complete the activities. Prepare a PERT/CPM network. Determine critical path and the expected time for completing the project (Activity Analysis and Event Analysis). Choose a project of some personal interest and knowledge (e.g. building a house, selling a house, political campaign etc.) Your project will be judged by how completely it identifies all activities, the reasonableness of your time estimates and the correctness of your analysis.
