Concept explainers
Interpretation: The following problem can be comprehended by the concept of osmolarity and osmotic pressure.
Concept introduction: Pedialyte is a electrolyte solution used in pediatric patients. Osmolarity is key factor that should be controlled while making pedialyte solution. Osmolarity is a measure of concentration of solute. It helps to measure the osmotic pressure of the solution and the determination of way the solvent will diffuse through the semipermeable membrane. The process of osmosis occurs from the tendency of the pure solvent to pass through the semipermeable membrane, into a solution having the solute to which the semipermeable membrane is impervious. Osmotic pressure is minimum pressure required to be applied to a solution to avert the inflow of pure solvent through a semipermeable membrane. The osmosis procedure is of great significance in the physiology of biological cell since the cell membrane is semipermeable in nature.
Given: We are given Pedialyte solution which has Na+ (45 mEq/L), K+ (20 mEq/L), Cl- (35 mEq/L), Citrate3- (30 mEq/L), and glucose (25 g/L). We are asked to find out the total positive and total negative charge of the electrolytes. We also need to find the osmolarity of the solution.
