Chapter 8, Problem 8.108CP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The volume of space occupied by 1mol of hydrogen atoms and the density of hydrogen gas in atom per litre should be determined if the gas pressure outside the space shuttle is 1×10-14mmHg at 1K.

Concept Introduction:

Ideal gas Equation:

Any gas is described by using four terms namely pressure, volume, temperature and the amount of gas. Thus combining three laws namely Boyle’s, Charles’s Law and Avogadro’s Hypothesis the following equation could be obtained. It is referred as ideal gas equation.

 nTPV = RnTPPV = nRT

Where,

n = molesofgasP = pressureT = temperatureR = gas constant

Avogadro’s hypothesis:

  • To relate the amount of gas and the volume.
  • VnnisthenumberofmoleculesatconstantTandP
  • V1n1=V2n2V2=V1n2n1

The vapour pressure of water at blood temperature is 47 Torr. What is the partial pressure of dry air in our lungs when the total pressure is 760 Torr?
In 2011, researchers showed that hypochlorous acid (HClO) generated by white blood cells kills bacteria. Calculate the percent dissociation of (a) 0.40 M HClO; (b) 0.035 M HClO (Ka = 2.9x10-8).
