Chapter 8, Problem 2AC
Summary Introduction

To determine:

In lakes, cellular respiration is used by microorganisms to produce energy. The raw sewage is dumped into the river and lakes, which causes mass fish kills, even when that sewage is not toxic for fishes. Explain the reason behind the fish death.

Introduction:

Bacteria and other cells acquire energy in many ways; one of them is cellular respiration. Cellular respiration is of two types, aerobic cellular respiration, and anaerobic cellular respiration. Cellular respiration requires nitrate oxygen and sulfate to break down the nutrients to obtain energy.

BOD (Biological oxygen demand) refers to the amount of dissolved oxygen required by aerobic organisms to break down organic material present in the water.

A worker in a cheese-making facility argues that whey, a nutrient-rich by-product of cheese, should be dumped in a nearby pond where it could serve as fish food. Explain why this proposed action could actually kill the fish by depleting the O2 in the pond.
50 states in America are home to more than 2,000 anaerobic digestion (AD) facilities. Millions of homes and companies may be powered by the clean, ecologically friendly biogas which they are creating, which can then be turned into sustainable natural gas. What facilities are there?
Many microorganisms in lakes use cellular respiration to generate energy. Dumping large amounts of raw sewage into rivers or lakes typically leads to massive fish kills, even if thesewage itself is not toxic to fish. What kills the fish? How might you reduce fish mortality after raw sewage is accidentally released into a small pond?
