Chapter 7.7, Problem 7.87ACB
Trading skills of institutional investors. Refer to The Journal of Finance (April 2011) analysis of trading skills of institutional investors, Exercise 7.36 (p. 386). Recall that the study focused on “round-trip” trades, i.e., trades in which the same stock was both bought and sold in the same quarter. In a random sample of 200 round-trip trades made by institutional investors, the sample standard deviation of the rates of return was 8.82%. One property of a consistent performance of institutional investors is a small variance in the rates of return of round-trip trades, say, a standard deviation of less than 10%.
- a. Specify the null and alternative hypotheses for determining whether the population of institutional investors performs consistently.
- b. Find the rejection region for the test using α = .05.
- c. Interpret the value of a in the words of the problem.
- d. A Minitab printout of the analysis is shown (next column). Locate the test statistic and p-value on the printout.
- e. Give the appropriate conclusion in the words of the problem.
- f. What assumptions about the data are required for the inference to be valid?

2. You are considering buying into a mutual fund that has earned a
normally distributed return on investment over the years. It has
a mean annual return of 9% (.09) with a standard deviation of 5%
(.05). What are the chances your investment will lose money?
The A&T pension fund has $13 billion, invested in equities. Assume a normal distribution and volatility of 15% per annum. The fund measures the 95% one-year VaR, which gives $3.2 billion. The pension plan wants to allocate this risk to two equity managers, each with the same VaR budget. Given that the correlation between managers is 0.5, the what should be the VaR budget for each?
Give typing answer with explanation and conclusion
Risk taking is an important part of investing. In order to make suitable investment decisions on behalf of their customers, portfolio managers give a
questionnaire to new customers to measure their desire to take financial risks. The scores on the questionnaire are approximately normally distributed with a
mean of 50.5 and a standard deviation of 14. The customers with scores in the bottom 10% are described as "risk averse." What is the questionnaire score that
separates customers who are considered risk averse from those who are not? Carry your intermediate computations to at least four decimal places. Round your
answer to one decimal place.

- Percival Hygiene has $10 million invested in long-term corporate bonds. This bond portfolio’s expected annual rate of return is 9%, and the annual standard deviation is 10%. Amanda Reckonwith, Percival’s financial adviser, recommends that Percival consider investing in an index fund that closely tracks the Standard & Poor’s 500 index. The index has an expected return of 14%, and its standard deviation is 16%. Suppose Percival puts all his money in a combination of the index fund and Treasury bills. Can he thereby improve his expected rate of return without changing the risk of his portfolio? The Treasury bill yield is 6%.
