Chapter 7.6, Problem 7.77ACI
Effectiveness of skin cream. Pond’s Age-Defying Complex, a cream with alpha hydroxy acid, advertised that it could reduce wrinkles and improve the skin. In a study published in Archives of Dermatology (June 1996), 33 middle-aged women used a cream with alpha hydroxy acid for 22 weeks. At the end of the study period, a dermatologist judged whether each woman exhibited skin improvement. The results for the 33 women (where I = improved skin and N = no improvement) are listed in the next table. [Note: Pond’s recently discontinued the production of this cream product, replacing it with Age-Defying Towlettes.]
- a. Do the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that the cream improved the skin of more than 60% of middle-aged women? Test using a = .05.
- b. Find and interpret the p-value of the test.

A special education teacher did research on whether or not there is a relationship between the number of students in his class and the number incidents of “acting out” behaviors exhibited by the autistic students in the classroom. He collects data for a year and aggregates them by month. He obtained the statistics below,
r= -.863
R2=.74
b= -1.212294
a= 131.176598
10.) How does the presence of more students affect the incidents in the class?
a) as students are added the incidences increase
b) as students are added the incidences decrease
c) the number of students does not affect acting out
d) the number of students caused more incidents
How much of the variability of acting out is explained by the number of students in the class?___________
In marketing children’s products, it is extremely important to produce television commercials that hold the attention of the children who view them. A psychologist hired by a marketing research firm wants to determine whether differences in attention span exist among advertisements for different types of products. A number of children under 10 years of age are asked to watch one 60-second commercial for one of three types of products, and their attention spans are measured in seconds. The results are shown in the accompanying table:

The extent to which theantibodies respond can be measured by looking at a persons titer, which is a measure of the number of antibodies present. The higher the titer is, the more antibodies that are present. The data in Table represent the titers of 11 ill people and 11 healthy people exposed to the tularemia virus in Vermont. Is the level of titer in the ill group greater than the level of titer in the healthy group? Use the α = 0.10 level of significance.arrow_forward
