Drivers’ use of the Lincoln Tunnel. The Lincoln Tunnel (under the Hudson River) connects suburban New Jersey to midtown Manhattan. On Mondays at 8:30 a.m., the mean number of cars waiting in line to pay the Lincoln Tunnel toll is 1,220. Because of the substantial wait during rush hour, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is considering raising the amount of the toll between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. to encourage more drivers to use the tunnel at an earlier or later time. Suppose the Port Authority experiments with peak-hour pricing for 6 months, increasing the toll from $4 to $7 during the rush hour peak. On 10 different workdays at 8:30 a.m. aerial photographs of the tunnel queues are taken and the number of vehicles counted. The results follow:
1,260 | 1,052 | 1,201 | 942 | 1,062 | 999 | 931 | 849 | 867 | 735 |
Analyze the data for the purpose of determining whether peak-hour pricing succeeded in reducing the average number of vehicles attempting to use the Lincoln Tunnel during the peak rush hour.

- The technology committee has stated that the average time spent by students per lab visit has increased, and the increase supports the need for increased lab fees. To substantiate this claim, the committee randomly samples 12 student lab visits and notes the amount of time spent using the computer. The times in minutes are shown in the table to the right. Complete parts a and b. Time 74 134 53 10 71 51 70 60 62 52 68 54 140 70 140 70 140 Time spent in lab Time spent in lab Time spent in lab Are any of the observations outliers? Explain. O A. The histogram shows that there are no outliers. The conditions for inference are satisfied. O B. The histogram shows that there is one extreme outlier. Since the sample size is large enough, the conditions for inference are okay. O c. The histogram shows two extreme outliers. With these values included, the conditions for inference are violated. b) The previous mean amount of time spent using the lab computer was 54 minutes. To try and capture more business in the area, CVS top management opened another store about 6 miles west on SC 707. After a few months, CVS management decided to compare the business volume at the two stores. One way to measure business volume is to count the number of cars in the store parking lots on random days and times. The results of the survey from the last 3 months of the year are reported below. To explain, the first observation was on October 2 at 20:52 military time (8:52 p.m.). At that time there were four cars in the US 17 lot and nine cars in the SC 707 lot. At the 0.05 significance level, is it reasonable to conclude that, based on vehicle counts, the US 17 store has more business volume than the SC 707 store?
