Chapter 6, Problem 93P
This problem is based on Motorola’s online method for choosing suppliers. Suppose Motorola solicits bids from five suppliers for eight products. The list price for each product and the quantity of each product that Motorola needs to purchase during the next year are listed in the file P06_93.xlsx. Each supplier has submitted the percentage discount it will offer on each product. These percentages are also listed in the file. For example, supplier 1 offers a 7% discount on product 1 and a 30% discount on product 2. The following considerations also apply:
- There is an administrative cost of $5000 associated with setting up a supplier’s account. For example, if Motorola uses three suppliers, it incurs an administrative cost of $15,000.
- To ensure reliability, no supplier can supply more than 80% of Motorola’s demand for any product.
- A supplier must supply an integer amount of each product it supplies.
Develop a linear integer model to help Motorola minimize the sum of its purchase and administrative costs.

You are the buyer for a major U.S. health care company. As buyer, your job is to procure and buy parts for the production of X-Ray machines. The buyer from your sister plant in Paris, France has contacted you to supply them with 5 center sections, (a major component used in the X-Ray tube), because they will run out of these parts within 3 days. The center section is procured from a single source supplier in England, weighs approximately 40 pounds, is made of lead and has a 6-week lead time, (the time your supplier requires to manufacture the center section). Based on this criterion, answer the following questions:
What mode of transportation is appropriate for shipping this part to Paris, France?
What carrier will you use?
Which carrier offers the best value?

This assignment is about focuses on the marketing areas of services, internet services, and pricing strategies within the context of travel sites.
The following web site provides reviews of various travel bidding strategy sites for priceline and hotwire:
http://biddingfortravel.yuku.com/
http://www.betterbidding.com/
Basically, priceline.com and hotwire.com are two travel sites that permit patrons to acquire unknown hotels, cars, and airline flights at a known discount price offered by the website. Only after the final purchase (e.g., accepting a website offer for discounted price), does the patron know the specifics of exactly what they have obtained (e.g., the Name of the Hotel). To simplify things, let's focus on hotels for this assignment. The two sites above (better bidding and bidding for travel) provide consumers information regarding how to bid more effectively and expected outcomes within both priceline.com and/or hotwire.com.

Some popular reality television programs follow people who buy the contents of abandoned storage lockers at public auctions. In most cases, several storage lockers are sold in sequence during a particular auction. Occasionally, one of the buyers will purposefully bid much more than the expected value of a particular storage locker in order to intimidate the other bidders. What is a plausible explanation for these excessive bids? A. The excessive bids may be rational if they occur during the last auction of the day. B. The bidder is trying to establish a first-mover advantage, but only if they occur during the first auction of the day. C. The buyer is trying to establish a reputation that may affect the outcome of later auctions. D. The excessive bids represent a form of tacit collusion among the buyers.arrow_forward
