Chapter 56.2, Problem 1SB
Summary Introduction
To review:
The research results that indicate that certain neurons are influenced by acoustical signals from members of their own species during the critical period.
Introduction:
All the behavioral responses, whether instinctive or learned, are regulated by neurons due to certain genes, which are expressed in their nucleus. This fact was proved by research.

Parasites are often microscopic in size but have large negative effects on their hosts. If this is true for the parasites of songbirds, what predictions follow about their effects on male song performance, and how should females respond to the song of infected males as opposed to uninfected individuals (Garamszegi 2005)?

Serotonin has been shown to be sufficient to trigger the development of the gregarious form of the migratory desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria). What predictions must have been tested to arrive at this conclusion? You should know that you can inject serotonin as well as drugs that disable serotonin directly into nymphal locusts.

In an investigation of fruit fly behavior, an enclosed choice chamber was used to test whether the spatial distribution of flies is affected by the presence of a substance placed at one end of the chamber. To test the flies’ preference for different substances, 50 flies were introduced into the choice chamber. A piece of ripe banana was placed at the end of the chamber on side A and a piece of unripe banana was placed at the end of the chamber on side B (Figure 1). The positions of the flies were observed and recorded at the start of the experiment and after 10 minutes (Table 1).

Throughout the experiment they tested how a target (male) cricket interacts with different stimuli in the form of both male and female cricket. Their methods revolved around getting quantitive data on three separate behaviors that occurred in the target male: locomotion(any time the target did a continuous movement), contact(counted when the target touched a stimulus with any part of its body), and chirping(audible, chirp sound with leg or wing movement from the target). The target was rotated each test, so each data point came from a different cricket with the female stimulus, being the same each time, and their previous target becoming the male stimulus. They would place the two male crickets in the target bin and let them acclimate for two minutes before they began collecting data from the target for three minutes. Then the female stimulus was placed in the bin and left…arrow_forward

When a red cube, about the same size as an owl is placed there, there seems to be no alarm. Which of the following best explains this reaction? The owl model is the ultimate cause of alarm vocalization behavior. The owl model, but not the red cube, triggers the fixed action pattern of alarm vocalizations. The squirrel is trying to attract the owl into its territory. The squirrels cannot see red objects, and so do not make alarm sounds. 0000arrow_forward
