Chapter 5.5, Problem 2SB
Summary Introduction
To review:
The difference between bulk endocytosis and receptor-mediated endocytosis.
Introduction:
When a substance or molecule is required to be transported actively in bulk inside the cell, a portion of the cell membrane folds around the desired particle and engulfs it. These membrane-enclosed sacs are known as vesicles and this process is known as endocytosis. This process requires energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate).

a) Endocytosis is the formation of vacuoles by the plasma membrane for the purpose oftransport inside the cell a small content of extracellular fluid.
b) Exocytosis is the formation of vacuoles by the plasma membrane for the purpose oftransport a small amount of intracellular fluid out of the cell.
c) Pinocytosis is a form of endocytosis.

Exocytosis is the last step of secretion of proteins from the cell. There are two broad types of exocytosis.
a) Name the two types of exocytosis
b) Describe each type of exocytosis (i.e. how are they different from each other?)
c) Give at least one example of each type of exocytosis.
