Interpretation:
The steps to calculate the number of atoms of an element within parentheses are to be explained with the help of an example.
Concept Introduction:
The chemical formula indicates the kind of elements that are present in the compound along with the relative number of atoms.
If more than one atom or group of atoms of the same kind arepresent, their formula can be set in parentheses along with a subscript which represents the number of units of that group.
In order to determine the total number of each type of atom in an element that is present in a group of atoms within parentheses, multiply the subscript outside the parentheses by the subscript for each atom inside the parentheses.
