The general formula of the ionic compound formed by the ions
Concept Introduction:
Compounds that are composed of one or more cations paired with one or more anions are known as ionic compounds.
Generally, cations are formed by the metals and anions are formed by the non-metals.
The rules to write the formula of the ionic compounds:
First, write the symbol of the metal along with its charge followed by the symbol of non-metal and its charge.
Use the magnitude of charge on each ion as a subscript for another ion.
Reduce the subscripts to get the smallest whole number if possible.
Check that the sum of the charges of the cations cancels the sum of the charges of the anions.
