Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The advantage of transferring protein bands from a gel to nitrocellulose during the western blot is to be defined.
Concept information:
Western blot is a technique where the proteins that are separated by the gel electrophoresis, are transferred on to a thin nitrocellulose membrane or any other absorbent material. Then, the proteins are identified in the same manner as in the ELISA technique.
Electrophoresis is a phenomenon based on the movement of charge-carrying particles in an electric field from one electrode to another. There are various mediums on which electrophoresis can be carried out, such as paper, liquid, or gels. The most common medium on which electrophoresis is carried out is the gel medium.

- REFLECT AND APPLY The genes for both the a- and b-globin chains of hemoglobin contain introns (i.e., they are split genes).
