Concept Information:

Mass spectrometry (MS) is the technique used in the separation of fragments of molecules according to the ratio of their mass (m) to charge (z), or m/z, ratio. This m/z ratio is used for getting information about the molecule’s structural and chemical properties, which then are used for identifying the molecule separated.

One of the most common types of MS is the MALDI-TOF MS, which stands for Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight. This uses lasers to ionize the protein molecules that are to be separated.
